Apostrophes !!

I have noticed that websites often don't render the apostrophe correctly. For example ...

 

 

 

 

Knock Knock! Who’s there? It's Skybell Version 2.0!

 

 

Notice the apostrophe replaced by some arcane trademark symbol (in this case ...  sometimes you will see other inappropriate symbols).

My question is, what causes this? Is it HTML? Some other coding language? Inquiring minds would like to know!
