Hi,

I've got windows 7 pro machine with explorer.exe running as a child of Explorer.EXE.  The child process is taking up huge amounts of memory, up to 2.8GB and is making tons of TCP/IP connections. I have also noticed that ctfmon.exe will sometimes run as a child of the second explorer.exe process, but this is not always the case.  If I kill the process, it comes back momentarily. It also runs and makes all of the connections in safe mode with nothing else opened.

I have scanned with mbam, rkill, tdsskiller, and all come up clean. I've been watching the tcpip connections with process explorer and have multiple screen shots of the connections made if that'll help. I don't know if I can export them in txt format.

I have been unable to find a solution to this online, a few people seem to have similar problems, but haven't seen a solution yet.

Thank you for your help.

-Lucas

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.

  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

How is computer doing?

p22002970.gif Update Firefox to the current 34.0 version.

p22002970.gif Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions (if present).
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

it is still not fixed. Second explorer.exe still has tons of tcp/ip connections.  I took a screenshot.  I don't know if this is ok or not (can't seem to get it to export the connection list). http://screencast.com/t/zwwtXpmH

Thank you again for your help.

FYI that is a Process Explorer screen shot. Only know because I've been fighting the same problem for the last 2 days on a machine. Has the feel of a brand new rootkit or the like. Whatever it is, its a nasty little bugger because NOTHING sees it. I've run everything I can think of and the problem remains. Gotta dig deep to find it, I'm preparing to wipe and reload the one I'm fighting.

From what I've seen if you kill the legitimate Explorer.exe, this task also ends. Restart Explorer.exe and it relaunches shortly thereafter. Uses up massive amounts of internet data, amasses larger number of tcp/ip connections. Did a repair install of Windows 7 even and it remained. Have done a bootrec /fixmbr, all of the usual rootkit scanners, etc. In my case I can't see any properties of file other than the tcp/ip connections with Process Explorer. Even ran some of the utilities looking for ADS and nothing is coming up.

No looking for help, just trying to contribute some knowledge! Good luck and hope ya can track this one down, have a feeling we're going to be seeing more of this one...
