Word 2007 files become read only

I find this infuriating. I'm building a Word file and am saving information as I go. Then, for some reason, the file becomes a "read only" file and I have to create a new name for it, save it in that new name, delete the original file and then rename the new one to the old name.  What a complete waste of time!

 

I have no idea why this is happening and it is extremely annoying.
