I took the Dell Diagnostic Test this morning because the system was starting up soooo... slow.  The result was that Smart Short Self Test FAILED!

Result:  Critical errors found and must be addressed immediately.  Follow instructions...

"Replace Hard Drive".  Recommended by Dell:  Dell 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive-1 TB, Dell 7200 RPM Serial ATA Hard Drive-250 GB, Dell 7200 RPM, Serial ATA Hard Drive-500 GB.

Now:  Primary Hard Disk, 487 GB Free (917 GB Total)

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

They will sell me 500GB approx. $50.  Refurbished 500GB $94........ or  at TB hard drive.

I would run the long diagnostic, if there is one, available per Dell.

Two opinions are better than one, if the only one documented is the short test, IMO.

You need to back up your important data to an external drive first. After backing up your data you can verify the Dell diagnostic using Seatools for Windows by doing the long generic test.

You can get 1TB new drives on Newegg for $50.

I'll try that, Louis.  Thank you for the reply.

I just backed up the computer and certainly appreciate the information about 1TB for $50 at Newegg!

You might get a better deal on Cyber Monday. Newegg will drop prices quite a bit this Monday.

Thanks everyone for all your help.  I decided to go with Dell.  They had a sale price of $49 on a 500GB compatible hard drive for my Inspiron.  Whew!  I have put the desktop away until it arrives a week from Monday with free shipping.

Hopefully it will be a breeze to install and I'll let you know afterwards.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
