Yesterday I was finishing reading online articles and closed out of a Word document I was writing when I wanted to check some files I had stored in the Windows 7 Downloads folder via the shortcut to the folder under Favorites in Windows Explorer. A dialog popup stated that the directory to which the shortcut directed was no longer there or available. I thought it odd and tried the shortcut again in case there had been a hiccup but I encountered the same error three more times. I went to the main directory on the 2nd hard drive where I have Windows 7 store the default media folders (Downloads, My Documents, My Pictures, etc), and found the Downloads folder missing. I also saw some weird .android folder with the main folders that I didn’t recognize. I then noticed in the navigation pane that my system was now showing 2 instances of itself on my home network. I could hear my drives in high activity and see what looked like higher than normal network activity on Window 7’s Resource Monitor. ‘Nuts, virus or bot!’ I thought, and instinctively unhooked the ethernet cable and had Windows shut down. I booted up again without internet connectivity and had Microsoft Security Essentials run a scan but it came up with nothing. I check Windows Explorer and the duplicate instance of the computer was gone but the Downloads directory was still missing. I shut down the pc and Googled for some solutions on a laptop but came up empty handed. I then booted the pc into Safe Mode with network capabilities and checked Windows Explorer. It appeared that Windows decided to create a new empty Downloads folder after booting into Safe Mode. I then downloaded Microsoft Safety Scanner from Microsoft’s site and had it scan but it came up clean. I then downloaded Piriform’s Recuva, installed it on my 1st Hard Drive and had it search the entire 2nd Hard Drive for deleted files. While it found things that I had deleted years ago, it found no trace of the Downloads folder, nor files and programs that I know were in that directory.

Finally a friend recommended I check the Event Viewer and see if anything odd had been logged. We found some atapi (Event ID 11) and Ntfs (Event ID 55) errors. But after downloading Western Digital’s latest drive checking software and having it do a quick S.M.A.R.T. check it came back ok.

At this point I’ve hit a brick wall and I still don’t trust that the system hasn’t caught some malware.

Additional Information:
* The only thing I installed the day the Downloads folder disappeared was an update from Adobe Flash Player which is set to notify me and then ask my permission to update.

* 2 days previous to this event my system hung for about 25-45 seconds while I was browsing my Facebook feed. The mouse and keyboard became unresponsive, (neither Caps Lock nor Number Lock would register a change on the keyboard’s led indicators), Crtl-Alt-Del wouldn’t work, and the hard drive light was not registering any heavy load or activity. Afterwards all seemed ok and nothing was out of the ordinary nor missing.

* System Specs:
Windows 7 Pro x64
Cpu i7-920
Motherboard MSI X58-Pro
Ram 3GB
Graphics Card NVidia Quadro 4000
Hard Drives RaptorX 150GB (OS, Applications) & VelociRaptor 450GB (Files, Media, etc.)

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

So far so good... at least it's looking less and less like an infection and more like a software/hardware hiccup.

All steps were followed except that I could not find a way to shut down Microsoft Security Essentials before running Junkware Removal Tool. Sophos Free Virus Removal Tool found no threats so there was no option to enter the details section and view any logs to post here. As before each log is separated by a single line break-- no extra characters were added by me.

Yes.

Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Alternate download: http://www.filehippo.com/search?q=java

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: If you're running 64-bit system make sure you install BOTH, 32-bit and 64-bit Java.

Note 3: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

What I'd suggest...

Click Start button and in "Start search" type:
cmd
Hold CTRL and SHIFT buttons and press Enter.
Command prompt window will open.
Paste this in:
chkdsk /r (<------watch for "space")
Press Enter.
Chkdsk will run.
Reboot.

I updated Java. I tried to run chkdsk /r using the command prompt with administrative rights but as C:\ was locked due to the fact that it's where the OS is, I went ahead and selected the option to run it on next reboot. Rebooted the system, Check Disk ran, and then I downloaded the program to get the log which is below.

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Launch a quick scan now" link)

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly ((you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix))

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

Well Broni I’ve appreciated the help.  I’ve completed all the steps and at least I don’t have to worry about an infection. And that is comforting. But since nothing showed up I’m guessing it was/is a hardware/software issue.

On the bright side when Sophos Virus Removal was doing a scan of my 2nd hard drive (a few steps back) I noticed it listed some files under a FOUND.000 directory. A little bit more hunting and I was finally able to figure out that the whole original Downloads directory got stored in that chkdsk created folder but (and this is the crazy bit) the folder had been deleted. The only reason I saw it was because Sophos checks files marked as deleted on the disk as well. After using PC Inspector File Recovery in Run as Administrator mode I was able to get the old program to see the deleted directory and have it do it’s best to recover some of the files and parts of others.

So I guess I’d recommend this thread marked as solved since it answered the question of whether the system was infected or had a hardware issue. I may open a new thread in the either the Internal Hardware Forum or Windows 7 forum depending what further research reveals.

Thanks again.
