I have an old windows xp computer that had some issues when i tried to scan with AVG it said was outdated so i tried to download 2015 version and now can't scan or even open that. I tried to run combofix and was told that AVG2015 live is active ??? I tried sophos and it worked. It found and supposedly got rid of 3 viruses
Javad2-UD
Mal JNLP-A
Java-PB
when it rebooted however i could not access internet with any browser IE,firefox or chrome even though the connection shows fine
I was able to access internet through a helpfile  but no browser

See if resetting Winsock and TCP/IP works. In an admin account get the command prompt. Run > CMD

Type the following commands

netsh winsock reset    <enter>

netsh int ip reset c:\Reset.txt     <enter>

Reboot.

Hi JohnC_21 Thanks for your reply but I am not well educated at the command level

the name i use to sign on is the administrator which is probably a problem in itself but moving forward I assume when i do cmd that i should just get a C: and not a C:\Documents and settings \username       i did try the above commands at that prompt but can still not get access to any of the browsers.

i should also say at this time that i was thinking along similar lines and downloaded NetAdapter to this computer and dropped it to flashdrive and loaded it and ran it . I at that time decided that i probably should not be so impatient and stopped messing with it till your response

What were the issues that led you to scan with AVG and eventually try Combofix?
You said "tried to run Combofix". Did you actually perform a scan with Combofix? If so, was anything removed?

While this is not the forum for Combofix discussion, I do need the answers to my questions which will determine the proper course of action.

hi Queen-Evie ,

Sorry i had read some of the introductory forums and thought it might not be appropriate to go into too much detail witjout being asked and or told appropriatae place to post info. I did attempt to run combofix after rkill ( rkill had 3 malaware entries that were stopped) but it said avg was still running live and i could not get avg menu up to shut that part down

I was promted to check last scan on anti-virus as this computer that i am online with (windows8.1) had a PC issue come up that said firewall not running so i rebooted and virus software was not accessable it is currently using McAffe and i was in process of fixing it with them when i needed to pay some bills online so i got out back up computer and decided best to check it as well as it is often used as internet computer in the household and AVG would not open either

Of the three infections I was only able to find anything on two and that was on the Sophos site. No description was given. Is both AVG and Sophos on the computer?

Please do the following.

Please download MiniToolBox  to desktop to run it. All Browsers should be closed.
 Checkmark the following boxes:

  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click Go and Copy / Paste the result. (result.txt) in your next post.

What is the make and model of the computer. Is this XP computer only used for some internet use?

You have two AVG's. I would uninstall both. After the uninstall use the AVG removal tool to take care of any leftovers. Remove 2011 first then 2015. Unless 2011 is not in Add/Remove Programs.

I would then uninstall JAVA.

Somehow your TCP/IP service is not working. I thought the TCP/IP reset I posted would work but it does not appear so. After Uninsalling AVG and Java do the commands again I posted in post#2.

Do you use Virtual Studio, software for program developement? If you don't, I would remove that too.

Are there any yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager?

Edit: If you do not use Virtual Studio, I would recommend you install Linux Mint on the computer just by reason of the security issues with XP. What is the make and model of the computer?

Are there any references to AVG in Add/Remove Programs? They show hidden in Minitoolbox. If there are no references in Add/Remove Programs, use the AVG uninstaller.

Do you have a XP install disk?

Did you try the AVG uninstaller? If you have, see if using Netadapter repair gets your internet back. Select Advanced Repair.

Ok I tried to get help with this before the holidays but got caught up in life so I stopped. It is a Dell Inspiron laptwith XP and i cannot get online with it at the moment, I believe from reading forums and the helpful folks that tried to help before that i should be thinking about Linux as a possible replacement for xp but I am not clear as to what all i have to do and in what order. Is it possible to do this without the internet connection or do I have to resolve this first?

Same system reflected at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/557961/xp-computer-is-working-but-has-problems/ ?

If so, I will just add this post to that topic.
