Wednesday night I started having issues with my computer.  When using Maxthon browser, I started getting massive amounts of pop ups when I tried to open a new tab or use the vertical scroll bar.  Until last night it was limited to what I did on the Maxthon browser, but now it has happened twice with Firefox.

One of the pop ups is larger than my screen, I am left with no other choice than to shut the browser down with task manager.

This morning I made a list of the urls that are associated with most of the pop ups I have seen the last couple of days:

possibleviruspopups_zps626f3ea6.jpg

When all of this started 2 days ago, the first thing I did was a MalwareBytes scan, and it came back with no threats.  So I ran Hitman as well, and it came back with a few tracking cookies, but those were deleted.  I also ran a full system scan with AVG and it found nothing.  Thinking it might have been a fluke, I opened up a new tab in Maxthon and 5 popups/new tabs proceeded to open up on me.  I googled a few of the above sites and the one stood out, ask.couplose.  I followed some of what it suggested to get rid of it; re-running my scans with the same "nothing wrong" results, resetting my browser settings back to default, looking through my uninstall programs in the control panel, but there wasnt anything there that looked suspicious, except for a few things dated back to when I first got this computer, and everything that had been installed over the last few days were updates to my previous programs that I installed: adobe, java etc.

I gave up for a while, and came back to this issue early this morning and MalwareBytes and Hitman both found things, which i quarantined and deleted per their recommendations.  I rebooted my system and got an event log error, but I couldnt even look at the event log to see what had happened, and couldnt connect to the internet, so I rebooted into safe mode and restored back to the restore point Hitman made.  Rebooted again and windows was working again, re-ran the scans and the only error I found was 1 tracking cookie.

I really have no clue what is going on.  The fact that just scrolling the page down will cause the pop ups to occur has me baffled.  I still randomly get the popups/tabs on Maxthon, and I haven't had any random popups on Firefox for several hours now.  So far, Chrome hasnt been affected.

My system runs 64-bit Windows 7.

Thank you!

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.

When I tried to run the MalwareBytes Anti-Rootkit, I got a pop up before I ever saw anything about updates or scanning.  The popup says:

Probable rootkit activity detected

Registry value "AppInit_Dlls" has been found, which may be casued by rootkit activity.

Note: Press "No" button if you're not sure.  If the tool crashes or terminates unexpectedly during a system scan, restart the tool and press "Yes" should this message appear again.

Do you want to remove this value and restart the tool?

I clicked "No" and continued on with the scan after updating.

MALWAREBYTES ANTI-ROOTKIT RESULTS:

Scan Finished:  No malware found!

One thing I noticed, it does not include the Maxthon browser, which is the one that I have been having the most trouble with the popups and the redirects with.  Just wondering if that needs to be looked at more.

I will post the JRT and Sophos next.

I wonder why it deleted my coupon printer program.  I do print a lot of online coupons, and that is used to do that.  Is that a problem to reinstall that after this is all taken care of?

Sophos is going to take awhile.  I will post the results when it is done.

Sorry, was watching football games.

I haven't had any issues today with Firefox, or with Chrome.  I almost never use IE or Opera, so I haven't double checked those, but I did just check on Maxthon, clicked the "I'm feeling lucky" button from the google homepage and it opened up to just 1 website, a fake flash player update site officialbrowswerinstall "dot" org.  I opened the google homepage again, and clicked on the search bar, didn't even get a chance to type anything, and that awful ask"dot"couplose"dot"com thing opened up.  Tried once more, clicking a link I have saved in bookmarks, that I havent had any issue with before, and it opened up 7 tabs:

1) fake java update, fugdownload105"dot"com

2) NYT style page - not sure why that one opened, seemed weird to me,

3) about:blank,

4) instanttechexpert, a fake support for kaspersky maybe?,

5) another ask"dot"couplose"dot"com

6) serve"dot"popads"dot"net

7) data:text/html,<script>window.close();</script>

Not sure what to do at this point.  I have been using Maxthon for about 2 years, and have never had any issues with it really, until now.

What else do you suggest?

Ok, I reset Chrome, and it seems to be ok, so far.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Maxthon.  I chose to save my user settings, so that I wouldnt lose all my bookmarks etc.  I opened up google, searched for a tv show (Finding Bigfoot), clicked the Animal Planet link, thinking it would be a safe site to open, and got 2 new tabs open up this time:

1) Popcorn TV lp"dot"bestsw"dot"net/popcorntv (long underline)/?o=357&campid=34441&creaid=6151&reqid=718622256

2) ask"dot"couplose"dot"com//sd/dw32.html?u=http%3A%2F%2Finb.csrvrgroup.com%2FWhiteLabelBidRequestHandlerServlet%3Foid%3D1%26width%3D1%26height%3D100%26pubid%3D9700%26tagid%3D1024%26noaop%3D1%26revmod%3DCRD%26cb%3Dcybabw%26encoded%3D1%26cirf%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F%26pstn%3D97001024&p=ShopBuddy&a=&c=9700-1024&b=chrome&bv=30&t1=1417310088334&tt=1417310088334&r=www.google.com&ua=2&n=convertmedia&sn=&mpa=0&mp=0

Thought I would do the full url to see what was up, and notice its got shopbuddy and csrvrgroup.  Does that help any?  What should we do next?

I'm not very familiar with Maxthon but when you try to reinstall it keeping your settings is not a good idea in case of adware infection.

Saving just bookmarks would be fine but all other stuff has to go.

I found this: http://www.maxthon.com/mx3/help/function/favorites.htm

So this is what I have done.  I exported my bookmarks into docs folder so I wouldn't lose them in case I screwed something up trying to send/receive them from the cloud.  As I thought about it, I decided not to make a profile, on the off chance that whatever user settings I have that might be messing things up, followed me on the cloud profile as well.  While I was double checking things before uninstall/installing again, I checked my extensions folder and noticed a shop buddy extension that I know I didnt put on there.  So I deleted it, restarted the browser just on a hunch, and so far, I have not had any other popups/open tabs happening.  I have only tried a few things that I did before that caused the multiple tabs to open, like google searching Finding Bigfoot and clicking on the Animal Planet link.  It went to the link and nothing else.  I click on google searchs "Im feeling lucky" and it came up on just that page without any additional pop ups or tabs.  I can up the google homepage search and click without anything happening.

I hope that is what the issue was with Maxthon.  And by saving my user settings, I guess that carried over the extension over to the new install as well.  I am going to go ahead and uninstall and reinstall anyway and see what happens.  I'll let you know what happens.
