Windows Vista Business SP2 Windows update Service not started (but it is)

Windows Vista Business SP2 on a Dell Optiplex 755 . Windows update says that the service is not started, but services.msc shows it as active. Is this a corruption or virus induced error in the registry, and , if it is, where do I find it , and how do I correct it?
