Is the signal strength indicator in network and sharing center reliable? I ask because I've observed that even though I get five bars on a wireless network on more than one laptop with several different OSs, I get readings in programs like InSSIDer and Xirrus that tell me signal strength is less than ideal (Low to Good). Any thoughts?

It's a rough approximation of the signal strength. Best indicator of signal strength is usually your data speeds.
