So, I'm not quite sure where to post this problem but I am concerned that I may be "infected" or perhaps being spied on by someone. I'm not sure. Basically, I see a small black box that intermittently pops up on my screen from time to time and then vanishes very quickly (i.e. - a split second). I have tried running MBytes and SuperAntiSpyware but it doesn't fix it. Could it be the screen? I'm at a loss as to what it could be.

Windows 7 64 bit
AMD Phenom 3.4

16 Gigs Ram

If any other information is needed I would be glad to give it.

Thanks all

Hello median -

As checks:

Download Screen317 Security Check from Here or Here and save it to your Desktop.
 * Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
 * Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
 * A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
 * Please Copy/Paste the contents of that document.
NOTE 1:: If any security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to
NOTE 2. If you receive UNSUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEM! ABORTED! (or similar) message, restart computer and Security Check should run

Also -

Please download MiniToolBox  to desktop to run it.
 Checkmark the following boxes:

  • List content of Hosts
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.
Click Go and Copy / Paste the result. (result.txt)

Could it be the screen?

This is a chance, but it would involve a group of pixels to fail in the same spot.

Now First -
Please download RKill by Grinler to desktop and run it.
A black DOS box will appear for a short time and then disappear.
This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
At most the tool will usually run for about 2 minutes
Please Copy and Paste the small log back here.

Do not reboot your computer until you complete the next step.

 Next :

  • Download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
     * Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click on the Scan button (only once)
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete. (a green bar will move across the top)
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button only once for accuracy.
  • A report (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for your review.
  • Check the listed removals and see if you are OK with them.
  • If you have questions, post the Report log back here.

 Next

  • Click on the Clean button only once for accuracy
  • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • Press OK finally to allow AdwCleaner to Restart the computer and complete the removal process.
  • After rebooting, a log report (AdwCleaner[S0].txt) will open automatically.
Copy and Paste the contents of that log in your next reply.

Next - As you have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware MBAM installed, please run a Threat Scan and Copy / Paste any results -

Next -

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit MBAR and save it to your desktop.

  • Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided on that same page.
  • Note: This is a beta version so please be sure to read the disclaimer and back up all your data before using.
  • Scan your system for malware / rootkits
With some infections, you may see two messages boxes.
  • Could not load protection driver'. Click 'OK'.
  • Could not load DDA driver'. Click 'Yes' to this message, to allow the driver to load after a restart. Allow the computer to restart.
  • Continue with the rest of these instructions.

If malware is found - do not press the Clean up button, please go to the MBAR folder and then copy/paste the contents of the MBAR-log-***(date).txt file to your next reply.

If there is no malware found, please let me know as well.

Thank you -

Thanks for those -

Microsoft Security Essentials
avast! Antivirus

Please remove one of these Antivirus Programs. You should only have one active Antivirus installed.

Ask if you would like directions.

System errors:
=============
The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
%%1068
Go to Services, or go Start and type Services at the Search box, then Right click on the one that looks like Gears and click Open
Right click on Server and set to Running
Also check these (should be OK)
Right click on remote procedure call (RPC) service-start it
Right click on security accounts manager service-start it

From RKill - It just clashes with Security Check .........
1 proccess terminated!

I found an Update for VLC media player 2.1.3 (HKLM-x32 , but this link is from File Hippo. You may wish to search for yourself in other areas.
Audio and Video >> Players>>VLC Media Player 2.1.5 (32-bit)

Total Fragmentation on Drive C: 13% Defragment your hard drive soon! (Do NOT defrag if SSD!)

This seemed a bit high since "Percentage of memory in use: 21%" is very low.

Windows 7 is usually set to Auto Defrag, but it can be done via Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Defrag.

To clean Temp files etc.

Please download Temp File Cleaner by Old Timer
Usage Instructions:
1 .Download TFC from the download link above and save the file on your desktop.
2 .Close ALL running applications as TFC will terminate them before attempting to clean up the temporary files.
3 .Double-click on the TFC icon.
4 .When the program opens, click on the Start button.  TFC will terminate the Explorer process and all running applications and then begin the process of cleaning out all of your temp folders.
5 .When done, press OK > Exit, and reboot your computer and finish the cleanup
No log is produced or expected.

A few ideas that may help you -

1. Turned off MSE active section

2. It looked like Server Services was on in my Services center. So I'm not sure about this. The directions may not have been clear enough.
3. Updated VLC

4. Cannot do defrag as I am running SSD

5. Downloaded TFC and ran it

Hi -

Usually prefer MSE removed so others do not activate it (but your choice)

If you went down the list of items and Server was running then it solves your main System error >>

Error: (11/22/2014 02:06:22 AM) (Source: Service Control Manager) (User: )
Description: The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
%%1068

VLC an be a Video program that is a personal choice if Windows Media player is not used.

SSD solves that problem of Defrag.

Is the problem still exactly the same ??

Thanks -
Minor spelling Edit -

Yes, unfortunately the problem is still the same. There is a small black box (about 1/5th the size of my screen) that seems to randomly pop onto the screen and then immediately vanish. It pops up at different places on my screen as well (sometimes in the lower left, sometimes in the upper right or left).

G'day median, I am filling in for noknojon ....he will return later in the day......

In the meantime....

Does the 'black box' have any typing/words inside it......does it resemble a 'dos' box......the sort of thing that appears when you type cmd into the 'search programs & files' box and then press enter....??

Apart from disabling the extra AV program, have you had reason to uninstall any other program ?

......................................................................................................................................................................................................................

In relation to the extra AV......fyi....

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti-virus product installed and running on your computer at a time.

The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti-virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:

1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.

Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either

..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Just a hunch.....Reset Chrome Browser...

Resetting your browser settings will reset the unwanted changes caused by installing other programs. However, your saved bookmarks and passwords will not be cleared or changed.

Reset your browser settings:

Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
    Select Settings.
Click Show advanced settings and find the "Reset browser settings” section.
    Click Reset browser settings.
In the dialog that appears, click Reset. Note: When the "Help make Google Chrome better by reporting the current settings" checkbox is selected you are anonymously sending Google your Chrome settings. Reporting these settings allows us to analyze trends and work to prevent future unwanted settings changes.

OR......maybe better....
