I have a GTX 470 which runs hot by nature.

What is a good card to upgrade to?  People in the store say a GTX 970 or GTX 980.  Those are expensive.

Anything for a few hundred that I would see a big different with?

What are you wanting to upgrade to?  In other words, are you wanting faster performance, or simply a cooler card?  It is possible to get a GTX 970 for about $350.  The upcoming GTX 960 should be a good card when it comes out, but pricing and availability is unknown.
