Hi folks

I have a laptop that is running very slow.  Any advice on how to clean it/speed it up?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Guitar13

How long have you had the laptop for? If it has been a while then I'd suggest the following:

-Get the cooling system serviced; Dust out fan and grill, apply new thermal paste (do not attempt unless you are comfortable with dismantling laptops!)

-Run anti malware programs such as malwarebytes, hitman pro, (please read up on proper usage of these programs if you have not used them before!)

-Run CCleaner to remove old junk from your hard drive.

-Use Seagate Seatools to test you hard drive to make sure it is not failing

That is a good start. Also run MSCONFIG and see what is listed in the startup tab. You don't need any of those programs for Windows to function normally but you may want certain things to run for your preferred environment.

I'm sure other people will have more to add to this.

Good luck :)

removed recommendation to run a tool not allowed in Am I Infected. That tool is restricted to Malware Removal Logs.

Changing the thermal compound should only be done if all other methods to resolve a overheating condition have failed.  This is especially true of laptops as this involves disassembling a good portion of the laptop.

It would also help if you post the make and model of this laptop.

The following scan will provide us with information which will help to evaluate the condition of the hardware installed in this computer, such as the CPU, motherboard, GPU,hdd, and RAM temperatures.  It will also display the S.M.A.R.T. attributes of the hdd.

Please download and install [url=http://www.filehippo.com/download_speccy/56796/Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  When  FileHippo opens, click on Download latest version in the upper right pane.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

speccy9_zps2d9cdedc.png

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

speccy7_zpsfa02105f.png

The following screen will appear, click on Copy to Clipboard.

speccy3_zps1791b093.png

In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.

Please run AdwCleaner

Please download AdwCleaner and install it.

When AdwCleaner opens you will see an image like the one below.

adwcleaner11_zps48314883.png

Click on Scan to start the scan.

Once the search is complete a list of the pending items will be displayed.  If you see any which you do not want removed, remove the check mark next to it.

Click on Clean to remove the selected items.  If you have any questions about any items in the list please copy and paste the list in your topic so we can review it.

You will receive a message telling you that all programs will be closed so that the infections can be removed.  Click on OK.  The computer will be restarted to complete the cleaning process.

When the cleaning process is complete a log of what was removed will be presented.  Please copy and the paste this log in your topic.

1GB of RAM is one of your problems.  Unfortunately it looks like there is only one DIMM, so in order to increase the amount of RAM you will need to replace the RAM which came with the Notebook.  The other bad news is that the maximum amount of RAM for this computer is 2GB.

How many applications are loading at startup when Windows boots? Almost all applications you install want to startup when Windows loads. If you allow all these startups, they will compete for and use system resources resulting in poor performance and a slow system. Many of these programs are not needed and disabling them can save resources and improve performance as they are available from Start > Programs or an icon on the desktop if needed.

Windows System Configuration Utility is one way to check a computer's list of startups but it was not intended to manage the programs that run when Windows starts.

A better alternative for disabling unnecessary startups is to use a free Startup Manager like one of the following:You will be provided with a list of programs that load when Windows starts. If you untick an entry it will no longer run at startup. This will allow you to experiment and see how your system performs with any of them disabled.
-- Note: some startup programs are necessary so be careful what you disable.

If you are unsure what any of the program entries are or if they are safe to disable, search the name using one of the following databases which hosts a collection of lists that provide information on the components of legitimate and malicious programs.Another option is to search the name using Google <- click here for an example.
-- CAUTION: When looking at the search results, be aware many sites may provide bogus information about a file name and claim it is malware or related to a registry error in order to get you to download or buy a program to fix it.

To remove common trial and promotional software, Toolbars and junk programs often installed on a new computer by OEMs, use PC De-crapifier which provides a wizard style interface with step by step instructions.

For other programs you don't recognize or know whether they are worthwhile to keep or be removed, use Should I Remove It?.
