Hello all,

I thought I was pretty proficient at computer stuff and tried to tackle a problem myself last year. Now I am learning that I might not have actually taken care of the problem and I am paranoid.

Last year I had some malware problems that I thought I completely solved by scanning and healing with AVG and Malware Bites (then scanning again in safe mode with the AVG USB -- didn't find any potential errors when I did it and I followed the instructions to the letter).

However, the other day, my boss asked me to help her with some of her computer issues and in doing so read a lot of stuff that wigged me out about whether or not I had actually solved my problem from last year. I got a bit paranoid in making sure I didn't have something leeching information off my machine. I had an email address that was among those leaked in that huge security issue early this year and while I have changed all my passwords, enabled 2 step authentication, etc etc etc, I just want to make sure that doesn't happen again.

I read some threads on this forum and used several of the scanners suggested here - basically, all the ones it turns out I shouldn't have used (the heavy duty ones). However, every single one but Roguekiller found nothing wrong, to my relief. With Roguekiller, I investigated and "cleaned" something that came up and thought oh, this is probably all the bad stuff I have to deal with. However, there are several gray PUMs listed. I know these can be potentially bad things, or not, and I'm not really sure how to investigate them further. I should have been more cautious when reading the instructions listed originally, but after reading this forum, I decided not to delete or do anything to them, as I know now that this could wreak havoc on my machine. I'm sorry. I thought I was proficient enough to handle this problem but it turns out that I am definitely not. :(

Here is a screenshot of the results.

As far as symptoms, my computer takes a weirdly long time to start up -- longer than the "30 second guarantee startup" that came with it's purchase. However, it doesn't seem to take an especially long time? I am not sure. Today I got the first runtime error I've experienced on this machine - mongoose.cl. Anyway, I can copy and paste this on the Malware section if needed, I just figured it would be more appropriate here, as I am not sure whether or not these are infections in the first place.

Thank you so much.

Edit: I can't believe I forgot this - I have Windows 7 on this machine.

Hello -

Here is the basic information that you are looking for -

PUP Vs PUM.
PUP can stand for "Potentially Unwanted Program" , generally add-ons when installing programs without reading the details.

PUM's are typically more dangerous, the letters standing for "Potentially Unwanted Modification"

Programs like RKill by Grinler, followed by Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and AdwCleaner by Xplode, are the main starters to remove PUPs and heal PUMs.

You do sound like you know a bit about running / updating and how to Copy and Paste logs from these programs, but here is my normal reply -

Please download RKill by Grinler to your desktop and run it
A black DOS box will appear for a short time and then disappear.
This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
At most the tool will usually run for about 2 minutes
Please Copy / Paste the small log back here.

Do not reboot your computer until you complete the next step.

 NOW :

  • Download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
     * Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click on the Scan button (only once)
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button only once for accuracy.
  • A report (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for your review.
  • Check the listed removals and see if you are OK with them.
  • If you have questions, post the Report log back here.

 Next

  • Click on the Clean button only once for accuracy
  • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • Press OK finally to allow AdwCleaner to Restart the computer and complete the removal process.
  • After rebooting, a log report (AdwCleaner[S0].txt) will open automatically.
Copy and Paste the contents of that log in your next reply.

Note: With most Adware / Junkware / PUPs and PUMs it is strongly recommended to deal with it like a legitimate program and uninstall from Programs and Features or Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. In many cases, using the uninstaller of the adware not only removes the adware more effectively, but it also restores any changed configuration.

Note - If not installed, please follow these directions -
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on the setup file (mbam-setup.exe) to install, then follow These instructions for doing a THREAT SCAN in normal mode.
  • Don't forget to check for database definition updates through the program's interface (preferable method) before scanning.
  • If you cannot update Malwarebytes or use the Internet to download any files to the infected computer, manually update the database by following the instructions in FAQ Section A.4. Issues.

Malwarebytes may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily Disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

  • After the scan, make sure that everything is checked and then click the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware.
  • After rebooting the computer, copy and paste the mbam.log in your next reply.

If Malwarebytes encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally will prevent Malwarebytes from removing all the malware.

Thank You -

Thanks so much. Give me just a little bit to run these scans. One question though, while I'm scanning:

>Note: With most Adware / Junkware / PUPs and PUMs it is strongly recommended to deal with it like a legitimate program and uninstall from Programs and Features or Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. In many cases, using the uninstaller of the adware not only removes the adware more effectively, but it also restores any changed configuration.

How do I know which programs are PUMs as I look through the programs in my Programs and Features? I uninstalled pretty much all the obvious crapware that came with my computer -- I'm just not sure what to look for.

Thanks again for this reply!

One more question - do I need to set up a system restore before I do all of this? That is the one thing I do not really know how to do. Sorry for the inconvenience / ignorance!

Just ran the AdwCleaner program. Also I am so sorry but I feel like a total dope. There were quite a few things listed in the "registry" section of this log -- I don't know what to clean and what to uninstall. I know that with some malware removal programs, messing with registry keys can mess things up. Should I just "clean" all checked files or what? (Again, so sorry!)

Here is the AdwCleaner log:

To create a restore point
  1. Open System by clicking the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_818, right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.

  2. In the left pane, click System protection. 18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b_48. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  3. Click the System Protection tab, and then click Create.

  4. In the System Protection dialog box, type a description, and then click Create.

For more information about System Restore, see What is System Restore?

Totally understood about the "I don't know what to clean and what to uninstall" and we say that we prefer you to ask questions.

This time all items can be removed as I feel they are not needed

The AVG SafeGuard toolbar is listed, but I prefer to remove it (just another tool-bar) or you can untick it from the list to keep it -

Thanks -

As far as symptoms, my computer takes a weirdly long time to start up -- longer than the "30 second guarantee startup" that came with it's purchase.

OK -

This was when the computer was purchased and had almost NO programs installed ...........What do you call a weirdly long time ??

My Windows 8 is still quick, but my Windows 7 unit now .... Well , I hit start / make a coffee / then use it - Not 30 seconds (or less).........

Thanks so much for your help! I am going to clean now. I was wondering - how do I know I got rid of all the bad stuff permanently? Do I need to scan again using a more intense scanner like RogueKiller or TDSS?

Also, my startup process sounds a lot like your Windows 7 process did. Ah well.

I'm about to push "cleanup" so I guess I'll see you (with my  log) after the reboot!

As you may have noted by reading around us, there are dozens of programs to run, but we try and relate them to your problem.

I would run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware just to be sure.

If you have the latest version, just hit Check for Updates, and run the Threat Scan.

Update it weekly and run it -

RogueKiller has been refined to RKill that we prefer to use here, as it is less intrusive.

A few quick checks for you -

Download Screen317 Security Check from Here or Here and save it to your Desktop.
 * Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
 * Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
 * A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
 * Please Copy/Paste the contents of that document.
NOTE 1 :: If any security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to
NOTE 2. If you receive UNSUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEM! ABORTED! (or similar) message, restart computer and Security Check should run

If it will still not run ignore it -

Please download MiniToolBox  to desktop to run it.
 Checkmark the following boxes:

  • List content of Hosts
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users Partitions and Memory size

  • List Restore Points

Click Go and Copy / Paste the result. (result.txt)

I downloaded these programs. I started this scan but I may have to actually run it later because I have to run out for a couple of hours (it's my SO's birthday and I promised to take him out for dinner. Ugh, what terrible timing for this problem!). I do not want to waste any of your time because you have stuck with me through everything! I will post these logs as soon as I get a chance.

Do  I need to re-run rkill before I run SecurityCheck and MiniToolBox?

Percentage of memory in use: 66%

Remember that when you got your computer it was only about "Percentage of memory in use: 5%"

Microsoft Security Essentials
AVG AntiVirus Free Edition 2015

This may be one of your problems, as you must only keep one Antivirus program and remove the other one.

MSE can be removed by following this direction.
>> Microsoft Fixit  >> http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9748340 << To have us uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials by using an alternative method for you, go to the "Fix it for me" section.

2 Antivirus programs will "clash" with each other and you may end up with neither program finding or removing problems.

Reset your Hosts file >> http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9668866 << To reset the Hosts file back to the default automatically, click the "Fix it" link, click, Run in the File Download dialog box, and then follow the steps in the Fix it wizard.

A few other minor items but they are not worth playing with now .........
