Hi.  I'm coming here from this thread.  My problems started about 2.5 weeks ago.  I rebooted my computer and noticed problems.  My original description is in the OP of that thread, but here's a list of the basic problems:

  • the desktop background had changed to black (I was able to change it back)
  • IE, Chrome, and WMP icons that were pinned to the taskbar had turned into blank document icons.  When I clicked on them, it said the target was not found.  I used the search box to find them and re-pin them to the taskbar
  • other key programs were missing from the Start menu (e.g., cmd.exe.)
  • Internet access was very slow, and connections would sometimes time out.  (Chrome does a lot of "Resolving host...")
  • Something keeps changing my internet security zone, under Internet Options, to Custom.  I change it to Default (Medium-High,) look back a few minutes later, and it's been changed back to Custom.
  • A window I'm typing in will lose focus for like 1 second, and then regain it.  I can't tell which other program the focus is going to.
  • Internet Explorer started throwing lots of JavaScript errors (I realize JavaScript errors aren't supposed to be my computer's "fault," but this change was sudden, IE hadn't been doing it before, and it occurred at the same time as the other problems.  I just disabled script debugging in IE.
  • System Restore wouldn't work

I followed all the advice given by Broni in the thread, which included running the following tools:

Security Check

Farbar Service Scanner

MiniToolBox

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit

Rkill

Temp File Cleaner (TFC) (which doesn't work)

AdwCleaner

Junkware Removal Tool

ESET Online Scanner

ESET found a couple of things, and that, combined with resetting Chrome, seemed to solve the problems. But a few days later, they came back again.  I followed the additional suggestions of re-running MBAM, MBAR, rKill, AdwCleaner and JRT, but to no avail.  The problems remain.

In addition, I did some digging myself, and found that directories kept getting created in my temp directory, containing directories entitled Temporary Internet Files.  They go multiple directories deep, but in the last one is a bunch of HTM and Javascript files seemingly related to ads.  Here are a few example file names:

AdDisplayTrackerServlet[1].htm

ads[1].js

AdServerServlet[1].htm

showad[1].htm

I can delete the entire contents of my Temp directory, and sit there and watch these things get created again. It happens even when I have no open programs other than the Explorer window.  I ran a program called PA File Sight, and found they are being created by the processes regsvr32.exe and taskmgr.exe.

So I'm following the suggestion of running DDS.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I fear I may have a keylogger and will never be rid of it!

Here is the DDS log, and attach.txt is attached.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

step1.gif In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/556595 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

step2.gifIf you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from the following link if you no longer have it available and save it to your destop.

    DDS.com Download Link
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control can be found HERE.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!
