Hi Folks,

I am currently having a problem with the Intel T5670 Core 2 Duo CPU overheating in my Dell Vostro 1310 laptop. I am still running Windows XP SP3. The laptop has 2GB RAM installed.

Whenever System Mechanic 14 or Norton Internet Security 2014 carry out background tasks, that is invariably when problems arise. The CPU can reach 85 degrees C and CPU usage for nis.exe, for example, can rise to around 90%. I am using Core Temp and Real Temp utilities to keep an eye on the CPU temperature. There is no significant accumulation of dust inside the laptop and the vents are clear.

I tried the Process Tamer utility but it is ineffective. I also toggled Programs and Background Services in Control Panel > Performance Options > Processor Scheduling - to no avail.

I am wondering if increasing RAM to 4GB (nominal) would help.

No doubt current apps are proving too much for the T5670 CPU. The laptop itself is six years old but I'd rather not upgrade it if I can avoid it. Is there not a way of reducing the maximum CPU usage? If a background scan takes a bit longer to complete, that is not a problem. I can live with that.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

System Mechanic is a registry and optimization program, neither of which are recommended by Bleeping computer.

Hi dc3,

I am very grateful for your reply.

I already have Speccy on my laptop. Tomorrow, I will do as you have suggested.

Expect a full reply tomorrow!

Thanks.

Over the decades since they began mounting heatsinks and fans on top of the CPU chips, the thermal paste and cleanlinesss of the heatsink become the important links.  The thermal paste goes between the top of the CPU chip and the heatsink.  Both surfaces need to be ckeaned with alcohol and only a small drop, about the size of double pinhead, applied in the middle and allow the paste to spread naturally as you mount the heatsink.  Fans are important and need to be clean too, along with associated vents.

Hi mjd,

Thanks for your reply.

As an Electronics Engineer myself, I can't see why the thermal paste could be an issue. Its properties would have had to change for this to become a problem. Is there any reason to believe this should be the case?

The determining factor with the thermal paste is age.  Most units will see a hardware failure before the paste dries out but for me, it became habit to check it after three years.  I found crusty, hardened and bubbled paste that did nothing to pass the heat to the sink.  Like most chemicals have a useable lifetime, the paste goes through some serious heat cycles and this also aids in the breakdown.  This applies to desktops and laptops.  The critical point is reached when maximum cycles are being used and  CPU reaches 100%, the heat generated needs to be removed from the silicon to keep those electrons moving freely, as it heats up, they can slow down and this generates even more heat and a cascade affect occurs.  Laptops are most often hampered by the confined spaces and small vent areas.  Many use a heat pipe with fins to carry the heat to a vented area and a fan can cool it and blow it out a vent.

Hi mjd,

Thanks for the feedback.

I think the key issue in my case is, as I said in my first post, CPU usage can rise to 90%. That's what is generating the heat. So my focus is on what, if anything, I can do about this. The process nis.exe is part of Norton Internet Security. When a Norton background scan starts up, it's not long before the CPU usage hits 90% for nis.exe and the CPU gets up to 85 degrees C.

I want to exhaust all possibilities before being forced into buying another PC. If I have to purchase a new machine, the one that I am now using will just become an expensive doorstop.

Obviously you were not running any of the applications you mentioned as being resource hogs which dramatically raise the CPU temperature.  The temperatures in the Speccy are pretty much what you would expect in a laptop/notebook.

Thermal compound does change it properties over time, it drys out and becomes less effective.  But with the temperatures reflected in the Speccy I don't feel that this is a problem.

Looking at what you have running in the Speccy you might want to look at what you have running at the startup.  Ex.: you have both Macrium and Acronis running.  The Acronis is doing a backup of the hdd, but you don't need the Macruim running.

Please download Autoruns.

Open Downloads in your browser and click on the Autoruns download.

Click on Run to initiate the installation.

When Autoruns loads you will see an image similar to the one below.

autorunsscreen_zps2ac55e2e.png

Click on File, then click on Save.

You will see an image similar to the one below.

Choose Desktop as the destination, then click on the down arrow in the Save as type: box and click on Text (*.txt), then click on Save.

There will be a Text icon on the desktop titled AutoRuns, click on it to open the log.

Copy the log and paste it in your next post.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Type C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries in the Run box and click OK.

In Binaries click on msconfig.exe, then click on Startup.

Go through the list and see if there are any items which you don't need at the startup.

Hi dc3,

I will do that but I can't see how it's going to help the CPU overheating problem. I can clearly see in Task Manager which processes are CPU hungry. One of these processes (nis.exe), belonging to Norton Internet Security, is one culprit. The other (SMAnalyzer.exe, I believe) belongs to System Mechanic. All other processes barely load the CPU at all.

Uninstall System Mechanic.  This is the equivalent of snake oil.  If you had read the information the link in post #2 opens you would understand this.

Norton is a resource hog, always has been, always will be.

I will do that but I can't see how it's going to help the CPU overheating problem.

By reducing the unneeded startup items you reduce the draw on resources.

I don't know what you had running at the time that you ran the Speccy, but 59C isn't that high for a laptop/notebook.  The maximum temperature for your CPU IS 100C, at 85C you are getting very warm.

Have you tried blowing out the insides of the computer with a canned duster, often mistakenly referred to as "canned air"?  Blow through the exhaust vents on the side/s first, then through the intake on the bottom.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

I would get rid of System Mechanic and Norton, and get Avast. I feel Norton is a pig, which you seem to be finding too.

Then disassemble the computer, clean off the old crusty thermal paste that is now failing you, and re-apply a little bit of new thermal paste. I noticed your skepticism to this being needed, but I have opened up a couple old laptops and what was in there was a joke: poorly applied thermal paste that was in a state that made me feel like an archeologist.

Another option would be to not run a virus scanner at all. That would help with the cpu usage problem, and depending on your situation might be ok.

Hi bludshot,

I replaced Norton with Bitdefender and my laptop is now running fine. I am still using System Mechanic as it does help with some things. The laptop definitely needs effective malware protection as it's an aging XP machine.

I took a look inside the laptop and decided not to do anything to replace the thermal paste. The CPU is cooled by a heat-pipe assembly, which would be very difficult to detach. Besides which, the maximum CPU temperature has dropped from 85°C to 65°C so I am no longer concerned.
