i had successfully burned 1/2 a dozen dvd's and then i kept getting "unspecified burner error" and after some "fixes" i now get a "unspecified target error". i have performed the fix here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...5BLN%5D;q314060 thinking that may be the issue. the drive will burn dvd+rw's but not dvd+r's. here's one of my many nero logs.
thank you for your time.

Hi pimfram.
The "fix" you applied should really only be done if you receive one of the specific error codes mentioned in the article or if the drive no longer appears in windows. As the article states, you may need to re-install your burning software as well after removing the reg entries.
That being said, your nero log says:

Burn process failed at 2.4x (3,324 KB/s)

That speed is only used with dual layer (DL) media.
Are these DVD+R's dual layer?
Your drive does not support dual layer nor is there a firmware upgrade above what you have (Version: 1.06) to address the issue.
Let us know.

You can do that if you like but I would be very surprised if it helped at all with the +R media problem.
That's most likely due to 1 of 2 things. Either your burner isn't recognizing the correct media, in which case try a different brand, or it's the method in which you're using.
Couple things you can check real quick.
Insert one of the blank +R's in your drive.
Open the Nero info tool.
On the drive tab there should be a check mark next to DVD+R under both read and write features like the image below:

On the disc tab, it should be correctly identifying the blank disc:

If it checks out there, when you're setting up for the burn, select DVD-ROM [ISO].
Under write speed set it to 2X, the max for your burner. sample below:
