Internet Explorer stopped working first.  The dialog box says Internet Explorer has stopped working- A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.  Chrome looks like it is going to start because of the symbol that pops up but after a second the symbol goes away and it just never opens.  When I open firefox it works but I noticed it is starting to slow down.  Do I have a virus?

Virus may be too strong a word

Did you get all of the updates released yesterday and did they all install correctly?

Have you rebooted the system at least once since all of the updates were installed?

Is your security program current and have you run a scan?

How old is the system and can you give us some details - HDD size and free space, installed RAM?

Where were you just before you noticed the problems?

Keep us posted

Dick

I would recommend Un-Installing and Re-Installing Google Chrome.

You can Download the Chrome Installer HERE

For Internet Explorer I would recommend you Reset it.

To do so....

Just go ahead and Open your Run Box (Win Key + R)

  • Type : "inetcpl.cpl"
  • Go to Advanced Tab
  • Then Click Reset at the Bottom.

Reset Computer and see what happens.

What was the message? And when did you receive it?

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel

What Browser are you using to Download the Program.

The Standalone is a .exe

Your Computer SHOULD be able to Perform the Action.

Glad to hear that your Internet Explorer is working.

And what is the issue when you try to download Chrome?

rebecca.....please dont leave us.

Despite others good intentions, it is quite possible that you have an infection present in some form or another.

I am not saying that is definitely the case......but you did post in the AII (am I infected area), and to date your implied question has not been answered.

So....perhaps we can explore the possibility with out interruption.

I will return in approx 5 minutes (the dog has her foot caught in the back fence and I need to go and rescue her)

OK rebecca (hope you don't mind my using that name..)

please run the following for me...

Download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE
* Save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: If a security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
    Checkmark the following checkboxes:
    Flush DNS
    Report IE Proxy Settings
    Reset IE Proxy Settings
    Report FF Proxy Settings
    Reset FF Proxy Settings
    List content of Hosts
    List IP configuration
    List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer log
    List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

That is True.

However, Crashing Chrome and/or Internet Explorer does not always correlate to Virus.

I would not recommend Malware Removal Tools and/or infection sweeps unless a virus is clearly present.
