Hi there!

I was asked to move my topic with all the necessary additional info from "Am I infected? What do I do?" to this section.

A little over the problem I am currently having:

One of my domestic computers (also extensively used for work) was infected by a nasty Backdoor.Messa and several other trojans (at least that's what was cought by a number of scanners before I wiped the HDD clean). Must say, that this was noticed only after some actual money went missing from our bank account and several of our emails were hijacked. I am now rather paranoid as regards my other computer. We do not use a network here, but we surely share files and so.

So, once I got to know the news I scanned my computer with pretty much everything (I have a paid version of AVG internet security 2013, but also scanned with Malwarebytes, TDSS killer, HitmanPro, Eset Online scan, etc.). The computer came pretty clean (well, some PUMs and PUPs were found). I then also decided to scan with GMER, but when running in a Normal mode it crashes into a blue screen with a message "IRQL not less or equal". I re-ran GMER in SAFE mode and it came pretty ok (I guess, it had some Uknown MBR code and several registry lines). I also experience some occasional command window on startup, but cannot read what it says (it dissapears quickly). And my Chrome has recently started crashing too (maybe could be due to a recently installed ScriptSage Chrome-addon?).  I'm slightly worried that I might have ruined something with this number of scans and I'm not sure yet if my computer could be trusted.

I would therefore appreciate any help or advise!

Please find DDS.txt contents below and attach.txt attached to this message.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Charlotte

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

step1.gif In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/555817 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

step2.gifIf you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from the following link if you no longer have it available and save it to your destop.

    DDS.com Download Link
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control can be found HERE.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

1. The problems I am experiencing and the scans that have been run are explained above, in my first message.

2. Please find the logs of the new DDS scans attached (dds.txt copy pasted and attach.txt added as an attachment.)

3. I do not have an original Windows CD, as my laptop came with the pre-installed OEM version of Windows.

Thank you in advance!

Hi MW_charlotte,
My name is Stragis and I'll be helping you out here. Please allow me some time to review the information you have provided. In the mean time, please refrain from making any additional changes to the infected hard drive as this can make it difficult for me to assist you. Thanks, and I'll post back here as soon as possible!

Hello mw_charlotte,
I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.

Around here they call me Stragis and I will be your acting computer wizard. I'm glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!
  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into wordpad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open wordpad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > wordpad . Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

We Need to Diagnose Your BlueScreen
  • When you boot your machine, press F8 to list the startup options, exactly as you would if you were trying to enter Safe Mode
  • Select "Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure", as shown here:
    advancedoptions.png
  • When your system BSODs, write down the STOP error code, as well as any written out error message back here. The STOP error will always appear, but the message may not. You are looking for this:
    bsod_c.jpg
  • Please post me the error(s).

In your next reply, please include the following:
    • Stop Code

Hi Stragis,

thank you for your time.

Excuse me it took so long to reply, but was backing things up a while.

Strangely, now that I ran GMER in Normal mode (this is how i used to get the blue screen), it scanned everything without any problems. Is there any BSOD history, I could retrieve the neccessary information from?

Update: Maybe of any importance? As I didn't have the previous GMER file on my computer, had to download a new one and noticed it was named differently this time.

!Update No2: Well, was too quick to rejoice:) The blue screen appeared in 5 minutes or so. This time it didn't have the "IRQL not less or equal" in the upper section (actually didn't have anything there, but the STOP code is as following:

*** STOP: 0x00000109 (0xA3A039D8B06DE8FE, 0xB3B7465F02EC2438, 0xFFFFF880009F05C0, 0x0000000000000002)

Hello mw_Charlotte,

I need more information from your computer about the BSOD.

Please Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

Hi Stragis!

And thank you for your patience.

Not sure if I'm doing it all right, but after opening BlueScreenView.exe (I also used .exe instalation, instead of .zip file) nothing happens - it shows "0 Crashes". The loading directory is as following:

C:\windows\MiniDump

What could have gone wrong?

Greets,

Charlotte

Hi mw_charlotte,

What do you have in the way of hard drives installed on your computer? I am seeing a quite full (and small) primary hard drive which can lead to many of the symptoms you are expressing.
Thanks,
Stragis

Hi, Stragis,

Well my main (and only) hard drive I'm using is 128GB SSD, and yeah I'm strugling with free space most of the time (waiting for a 10TB SSD to show up on the market:). The problem is that I've already got rid of all the media and games on this laptop, and it's only OS, essential programs and necessary documents which I'm using daily that are actually staying. However maybe I should run some CCleaner, as I'm not really cleaning any temp files on a regular basis. Do you think it's a good idea?

However, my question is still the same, how can I be sure that my computer is not hiding any infections which could compromise the security of my computer? I'm particularly worried about rootkits, as I want to start with a whole new level of security on it and just want to make sure it is clean. I also do not have an option of a clean re-install of the windows, as mine laptop came with an OEM version of it. The other, infected computer, went through a clean installation after disk wipe, but that came out pretty expensive in the end.

Looking forward to your advise and thanks a lot for your help so far.

Greetings,

Charlotte

Hi MW_Charlotte,

I'm not presently seeing signs of infection on your machine. Looking at your logs the issues you have reported sound mostly like that of a computer on the edge of its HDD space. Running on a nearly full HDD degrades the lifespan of hardware and can cause system instability.

The 100% sure way to have a clean computer is a clean re-install. You know that already. So I won't go into it more.

You've run most of the great tools I would put into this machine already, and your post says they came back clean. I've got one more root-kit specific we can run for piece of mind.

Please download aswMBR ( 4.5MB ) to your desktop.

  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon, and click Run.
  • When asked if you'd like to "download the latest Avast! virus definitions", click No.
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan.
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop, then copy and paste it in your next reply.

In your next reply, please include the following:

  • aswMBR.txt
  • MBR.dat

Hi Stragis,

Please find the contents of the aswMBR.txt below. I was tempted to press the FixMBR button too, but decided to wait for your instructions! And I could not attach the MBR.dat file as it prompted for the following error:

  • MBR.dat

You aren't permitted to upload this kind of file

Let me know how should I proceed.

Greetings,

Charlotte

Hello mw_charlotte,
Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
  • The tool will start to update the database, please wait a bit.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Clean button.
  • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S#].txt) will open automatically (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.
I'd like one final look at the system before we mark it all clean and send you off.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system, download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
  • Right-click FRST then click "Run as administrator" (XP users: click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
  • When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • When finished, it will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool was run from.
  • Please copy and paste the log in your next reply.
Note 2: The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory the tool was run from). Please also paste that, along with the FRST.txt into your next reply.
