I recently ran Housecall and was surprised when it detected and removed two Java exploits (EXPL CVE20130431).  Further research seemed to indicate they are associated with a fake antivirus trojan.  Given my lack of obvious symptoms associated with that sort of thing, I was almost convinced I was dealing with a false positive...until I looked in the registry and found some entries that match up with those kind of trojans.   But I can't determine which variant it is since none of the entries match up completely with any of the removal guides I have been able to find.  I hope someone here can help me figure what's infected my PC and how to remove it.

Here are the suspicious registry entries:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\INTERNET EXPLORER\INTERNATIONAL\CPMRU\

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\MEDIAPLAYER\PREFERENCES\PROXYSETTINGS\

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\MEDIAPLAYER\PREFERENCES\PROXYSETTINGS\HTTP\

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS MEDIA\WMSDK\

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS MEDIA\WMSDK\GENERAL\

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan button.
  • When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

p22002970.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

Do you think it's possible the active trojan has been removed and all that is left are the registry entries I noted earlier?  I did some research on said entries and the closest match seems to be the virus characteristics of RDN/FakeAV-N.bfr!B34426F6FD7B (but I don't have all of them).

I had ran ESET after Housecall removed the Javascript exploits and it found nothing.  Please let me know if I should run those other scans in light of this new information.

Those registry entries you posted earlier are all legit.

Yes it's possible that the infections had been removed already.

I still want you to run steps from my previous reply.

My computer seems to be running normally and I don't seem to have any of the other issues people who have detected that Java issue on their computers seem to be having.  I also checked my Firefox plugins and noticed I had a Java Deployment Toolkit plugin with vulnerabilities set to "Ask to Activate."  I have since set it to "Never Activate."

I successfully downloaded the latest versions of those Adobe products.  Please let me know if I should run any other scans before I ask the questions I mentioned earlier.

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Launch a quick scan now" link)

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly ((you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix))

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

11. Read:

Thank you!  I have a few final questions before I complete the final steps.

1.  I accidentally clicked something while looking at my temp files (C:\Users\Crimson Cricket\AppData\Local\Temp) last night and got a message about something having been moved.  But I don't know which file it was or where it moved to!  Is there any way I can figure out what happened so I can return it to the temp folder?  I imagine I need everything in its proper place so those uninstalls I have to do will be fully effective.

2.  I also noticed I have some registry entries whose values match up with some of the values I found in some removal guides I found while trying to figure out whether or not I had a false positive.  For example, my Start value for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess is different from the default given here and the guide for TROJ_ATRAPS.CW shows I have some matching values.  To add to my confusion, guides like this don't make it very clear if the registry entries listed are supposed to represent the originals or if they show what the infected entries should look like.  Is this like my previous registry question, where the stuff I was concerned about turned out to be legit entries?

1. There are no important files in temp folders so no harm done.

2. If the computer is doing fine leave registry alone.

Good luck and stay safe :)

Now I'm having a problem with Malwarebytes!  I had started a threat scan and it couldn't get past "Pre-scan operations."  It wouldn't let me pause or cancel the scan, so I had to close the program.  When I opened it, the Database version Loading part of the dashboard kept trying to load and made no progress.  After manually completing the updates, I had the same prescen operations issue.  Thankfully rebooting in safe mode with networking resulted in Malwarebytes being able to load the database version after a brief wait and I could run a full scan.  Going back into normal mode resulted in a normal dashboard and I could run a scan all the way through without any threats being detected.  None of the other scans I ran with other programs at the time found anything or had any issues.

I haven't run Delfix yet and was wondering what I should do next.  I did open some files and accidentally ran an old music CD-R while making a backup disc and also visited a few sites, so I'm not sure whether or not this is a new issue.  Please help me.

Probably one time glitch.

I wouldn't worry about it.
