System is constantly freezing, and safe mode restarting.

Hello.

So at the begining, I though it may be a hidden virus in my system, but after I followed the steps to clean my computer from thread "Am I infected", it appears everything is fine- no virus or harmfull software.

The main problem is that my pc randomly freezes- it happens like this:
While using any other software than video games (literally everything), at some point computer just.. stops working. I can't move my mouse, can't type anything- it literally freezes for a moment (including sound, though while using windows media player, sometimes program just doesn't work but audio goes on), usually about 30 seconds (sometimes longer). And it wouldn't be that much of a problem, if it wouldn't happen so often.
While playing video games- that's when hell starts. It can happen once a minute, and sometimes even more often. During that freez, audio starts to loop last half a second untill it unfreezes.
Just to clarify- I'm not playing/using any kind of software that my PC can't handle. Most of the things that I use require really small amounts of ram or cpu. And surprisingly- while game requiers small amounts of ram and cpu and freezes constantly, my other software that sometimes can take almost all of my ram and 90/99% of the cpu, freezes very rarely and it's all ok.
It was something that just started happening one day, and never stopped. Just got worse.There's nothing going on in the background that could possibly cause that big problem.
I've tried to track down maybe some patterns, or perhaps it was something I was doing that causes this to happen. But no- it's completly random.

And here's another issue:
My coputer restarts when I try to get into safe mode. It looks like this: I restart, keep pressing F8 untill a menu shows up, I choose "Safe Mode", windows shows up asking me for my profile password. I type it- enter- says "Welcome", and then restart... I tried ten times or more- always the same scenario.


Normally, I would wipe my hard drive clean the first week this happend and reinstalled the system. But I can't do it.. I have gigabytes (700 to be exact) of data that I just can't lose. And there's no possible way for me to make a copy of it. If I'm to delete all that, I can as well throw my computer out of the window...


I need help with this. Situation is desperate. And I need my PC working as soon as possible. Please help.

Hi,

First and foremost get a backup solution in place NOW!

You can get your data off now but if you have a hardware failure in progress it may be the HDD and if so you may not be so lucky later.

Have you opened up the box and made sure that it's dust free and that all of the fans are working properly? What are the temperature ranges for the graphics card and the CPU?

What's your security software, is it current, have you run any scans?

How much RAM is installed?

Three days ago I have posted the same issue in "Am I Infected" here, on this forum. One of the members gave all the software and instructions I needed in order to clean my hard drive from any harmfull software. Yesterday I finished. It detected a few things, but nothing serious. And it was all removed anyway. Nothing have changed... system still freezes.
Besides that, I'm using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and I'm scanning computer regularly.

I have installed 4gb of ram, but I'm using Windows 7 32bit, so it allows me to use only 3gb.
The core temperature stays around 34-35 °C.

What are the system specs? HDD size & free space, PSU wattage, etc.

What temp range is the GPU running in?

Any guess as to the % of RAM and/or CPU usage about the time things go bad?

The simplest way to approach this would be to do a system restore to a time earlier than when this problem started - AFTER doing a full backup of all your data.  I have seen similar issues in the past week or so that I suspected a Windows Update to have caused.  Doing a system restore to a few days before the problem began corrected the issue.  There are other ways but this may be the simplest.

System specs:
Processor: AMD Athlon™ II X2 260, 3.20 GHz
Ram: Installed 4.00GB (3.21 usable)
Hard Drive: 931GB of total space, 85GB of free space, Only one partition.
*I had less than 10GB of free space untill recently, I thought it may get better if I would make some more free space. It didn't help though.
System type: 32-bit Operating System

Other information:
GPU Core temperature: 40-43 °C
Ram usage with all aplications turned off: around 700MB
Ram usage as we speak, with Firefox and Skype: around 1.3GB
CPU usage: 0-15%
I am unable to check ram/cpu usage while freez happens because of the... well, freez.

From your earlier posts, I was not able to tell if you have an anti-virus program installed.  If you do have one, what is it and is it turned on for active scanning?  If you don't have an antivirus program, please install one as soon as possible.

 

Have you tried starrouter's suggestion to do a system restore to an earlier time?  Has that helped any?

 

If you're still having random freezes, let's try a couple of simple diagnostic fixes, starting with running the check disk command:  Run chkdsk command

 

Next, please try running the System File Checker program, as follows:

(If your Windows installation is acting strange, it may be because some of your key system files have somehow been deleted or corrupted.  System File Checker is a utility in Windows that scans your Windows system files and restores any missing or corrupted files.)

 

To run System File Checker from within Windows go to an elevated command prompt as follows:  click on the round Start orb in Windows, type cmd in the search box, then when cmd.exe appears, right-click on it and select “run as administrator”.  When the command prompt box opens type sfc /scannow and then press the enter key.  This will scan all protected system files and replace any missing or corrupted files with a cached copy that is located in a compressed folder on your hard drive.

 

Note:   Do not close this Command Prompt window until the verification is 100% complete. The scan results will be shown after this process is finished.

Please report back on whether you were able to successfully run system file checker, and if this corrected your computer problems.

"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? <Y/N>"

When I typed "Y", and restarted the system, nothing changed. I tried again, with all applications turned off, but it still doesn't work.

Per starrouter's suggestion:  Have you tried doing a system restore to an earlier time yet?

 

Do you have an antivirus program installed and active?  If so, which one are you using?

 

Sorry to see that your initial attempt to run chkdsk did not work.  Were you trying to run it from a command prompt from within Windows, or from a command prompt using your Windows boot CD/DVD?  (Please try running it both ways, just to be sure we haven't overlooked something simple.)

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Freezes keep happening, unfortunately system resotre didn't do much good. Nothing has changed.

Tristan,

 

According to your Speccy report, your firewall is currently disabled, and your antivirus status is also showing as disabled.

 

You do have McAfee Security Scan Plus installed, but I don't think that is a reputable antivirus program.  You also have Eset online scanner, but that only scans on demand, it does not actively block viruses.  Recommend you promptly enable your built-in Windows firewall, then install, update and run an antivirus program that can actively monitor your computer system.  I like the free Microsoft Security Essentials program, but there are many others you can choose from.

 

Also, you do not appear to have any Windows updates installed.  That is another security risk, so recommend you start installing those missing updates.

My system IS clean from viruses. I'm using Anti-Malware by Malwarebytes regurally, and before I started this topic, I followed all the instructions from "Am I infected?" topic, which is scanning your computer using 12 different programs... There is no virus or harmfull software.

So that's it then? The only way is to reinstall the whole system and format a hard drive?
