Hi.

I've been messing with a problem regarding my wireless internet connection.  Throughout the course of a typical session where I am on line, the connection will drop repeatedly.  Every time the connection drops, I use the Microsoft Troubleshooter which always restores the connection.  Afterwards, it provides a diagnosis that changes slightly for each time a repair is needed.  Eventually I will reboot and the cycle starts over.

The messages from the Troubleshooter are:

  • Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (primary DNS server).
  • The connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the Internet is broken - The default gateway is not available.
  • The connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the Internet is broken

I have run several diagnostic programs and have assembled a log.  They include Mini toolbar by Farbar, Rkill, and the MS Event log which points out some errors..  I would be happy to send it to any good samaritan who is helping with the problem.

I recorded all of the information from Microsoft when I sought a solution from their Community forums. They confused me more than anything.  This information is included in my log.

I have reset my router/modem several times. As much as I would like to be able to blame this on Comcast/Xfinity, I don't think they are to blame.  My connection and service has been reliable.

I eliminated the Ghostery application hoping that this was causing the problem.  It was not.

My security system is pretty basic.  I use Microsoft Windows 7 Home premium standard firewall and Security Essentials and Spybot S&D.  I run the Spybot weekly.  I also run the gambit of security system detectors available through Bleeping Computer.  I will run one or two monthly.

I will include the most recent FARBAR Mini-toolbox report.  I appreciate your time in helping me fix this nagging issue.

Sincerely,

Jim Considine

Using ubuntu and sharing how to as well as collecting how to scripts for common programs. Feel free to ask or share ^-^

I have reset my router/modem several times. As much as I would like to be able to blame this on Comcast/Xfinity, I don't think they are to blame.  My connection and service has been reliable.

With the mention of Comcast/Xfinity I have to ask this: what is the manufacturer/model number of your modem?

It is possible that you have a Comcast issue. I do have something else to offer but will wait until I receive an answer to my question.

Do you have any other devices connected to the wifi? If so, are they having any connection issues?

Have you tried rolling back the driver or updating it via the website of your computer manufacturer?

I just started exploring this option.  I followed some threads on line and found that other people experiencing this problem were updating their wifi drivers via the Intel website.  I followed the lead and opened up the next can of worms. After going through all of the nonsense in order to to register on the Intel website (they are attempting to turn their forum into a social networking love fest), I updated the driver.  I was relieved to have found the cause and cure only to find that the problem returned.  I reinstalled the driver about a half dozen times using all the tricks like doing it in safe mode, uninstalling the old driver first, shutting down the security system) and it still did not work.

I reviewed the logs and these messages posted  ....

  • The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. Contact your support personnel to verify that the WIndows Installer service is properly registered.

From my Event Log I found this information:T

  • Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP server) for the Network Card with the network address 0x001E6480BF6D. The follow error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on it's own from the network address (DHCP) server.

Pursuing this further, the next advice was to perform a clean boot.  I did this.

I just checked and the driver update is not installed.  That's the bad news.  The good news is that the connection has not broken down while I have written this reply.
