I'm using Hp pavilion entertainment pc.  pavilion dv5............... runnings windows vista sp2

I can't understand why the screen periodically wants to turn black while in the middle of things. usually a game on pogo.com and its turned black while i was browsing.

i'm using spybot SD, malwarebytes, mcafee secuturity, rkill, there's another one i've downloaded on here but cant remember the name of it. I've ran these programs but have found nothing bad.

If someone can help guide me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful :)

Hope I didnt leave out any important information about my system. .......  this notebook was given to me. I did a manufacturer reset when I received it..... as far as I know all windows updates are installed....

Is this the same notebook which you burned yourself with it sitting in your lap?

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  When  FileHippo opens, click on Download latest version in the upper right pane.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

speccy9_zps2d9cdedc.png

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

speccy7_zpsfa02105f.png

The following screen will appear, click on Copy to Clipboard.

speccy3_zps1791b093.png

In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

its not letting me paste the url for the first program u had me download

Since you posted the Minitoolbox I'm guessing you are referring to the Speccy snapshot?

If this is the case, go back and follow the instructions one step at a time.

I'm still waiting for the Speccy snapshot.

By the way, typing in all upper case letters is considered to be shouting.

If you have an external monitor or can borrow one see if this still happens with it.

When the display turns black, how long does it remain this way.

The next time this happens take a strong flashlight and shine it on the display and see if you can see what was being displayed before the screen went black.  If you can see anything of what you had previously been seeing you may have a bad backlight.

Try booting into Safe Mode with Networking and see if this occurs there.  Safe Mode uses a native Windows graphic driver, so if the problem doesn't repeat in Safe Mode it will be a good indication that you need to replace the Intel graphics drivers.  Because the graphics driver isn't the Intel driver usually used you will notice the that the graphics quality will be poor by comparison.

I understand that this is a sporadic occurrence, so this may take a while.

If you need instructions for booting into Safe Mode with Networking I've posted them below.

With the computer turned off press the power button and immediately start tapping the F8 key and continue till you see the Advanced Boot Options.  There will be a window similar to the image below.

windows-vista_safe-mode2.png

Use the up or down key to navigate to Safe Mode with Networking, once the cursor is over this press Enter.

Safe Mode with Networking should allow you to do most everything you normally do.

A simple step you could try is updating your graphics driver. Here is the driver download from HP's website

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-67044-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=2100&product=3860525&sw_lang=    if that link doesn't work, here is their direct download

Also! I noticed that your notebook has had a power supply recall that might affect you.....in a burning down your house kind of way, Here is the article on HP's site

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c04404446&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=2100&product=3860525&sw_lang=

@resa83

Please do what I have suggested before considering downloading new drivers as suggested by wishmakingfairy.  What I've suggested will show one way or the other if you need to replace the graphics drivers.

Also! I noticed that your notebook has had a power supply recall that might affect you.....in a burning down your house kind of way, Here is the article on HP's site

The recall is for the AC cord, not the power supply (power adapter).  This specifically applies to a AC power cord with LS-15 visible on the adapter plugin end of the cord.  This does not apply to all HP Notebook computers.

Use the up or down key to navigate to Safe Mode with Networking, once the cursor is over this press Enter.

Safe Mode with Networking should allow you to do most everything you normally do.

It hasn't happened recenty at all so what im thinking is that it only happened when the laptop wasnt charging bc it wasnt connected those times it went black..... i have a bad battery i know this already. we have to keep it charging. so therefore im not taking any other steps at this time. if it occurs again i will come back here. thank you for your help.

If the battery is old it will reach a point where it will no longer take any charge at all.

I never really thought about the flash light point :P I've had laptops do this before and maybe one desktop monitor, that never crossed my mind.

Using ubuntu and sharing how to as well as collecting how to scripts for common programs. Feel free to ask or share ^-^
