I searched but couldn't find anything this basic. My older laptop's display went black 18 months ago and it has Win XP and an IDE HD. I want to grab some of the files with my current laptop which is Win 7 and SATA HD. I think the easiest way would be to remove the IDE HD and get an IDE/SATA USB HD enclosure and transfer the files to my current laptop. Mainly some WORD files.

Is it this easy or am I missing some conflicts?  Thank you

That would be the way to go and you would get a USB external HD for essentially free. Just be careful handing the hard drive. Avoid touching the PCB. You can get some for a good price on ebay if you have an account there.

Thanks John. Looked at a few on Ebay and Amazon earlier this morning and figured if I got an IDE/SATA USB enclosure it could handle the old IDE HD and in the future another SATA if I need one. One extra drive. What's a PCB?

The Printed Circuit Board on the drive. Avoid touching that.

The same thing happened to me a while back- that's what I would do!

PCB on HD, OK got it. Thanks John and Paul. I guess since the OS on that drive is XP I can use an old copy of WORD on there that I like for some things too. Less clunky than my newer version.

I am not sure Word would run as you would not be running the XP OS on the external drive. And you can't transfer the program to your new computer unless you use a special program and I don't know if that would work as it would conflict with your current word.

Ah thanks again John. I had assumed (wrongly) that XP would run the external HD. I really just need to move the files off that old laptop.

Well, it may be possible to boot the USB external if the BIOS is set to boot from USB as the first boot device. Give that a try.

Edit: Will not work, Sorry.
