Hi,

Is your boss aware of this?

This system is terribly infected... and to be honest, the best way is to format and reinstall, because if it's your bosses pc, and if we even try to cleanup this manually, this system can never be trusted again, because passwordstealers, backdoors and a lot more malware is present as well.
Let me know how you would like to proceed with this. I can't guarantee we can clean this all if you want to clean this manually and I can't guarantee we can repair all the damage it already caused as well...

I will do whatever you think is best. My boss gave me the computer becuase I'm normally pretty good at fixing things up, especially after learning from you guys here. I'm not sure how to clear a hard drive though, so I could use assistance with that sort of thing. Would it be safe to put his files on an external hard drive so that he can save some pictures?

Well, I hope that your boss pays you for this

Yes you can create a backup of important files like pictures, documents.... Just ask him what need to be backupped. Then burn these on a cd.

Next are the most important things to perform in the right order:
  • I don't know if you have seperate cd's with an Antivirus and firewall present on it. In case you don't or you know where the installer is located on your computer, burn it on cd as well.
So now, you have everything ready to protect you after install.
  • disconnect from the internet (most important step!!) This means unplug your internet cable. If the computer has a wireless card, remove or shield the card so that the computer cannot connect to any access points.
  • Then start your reformat procedure. Read here with pictures explained:
    how to format: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/format_XP.htm
    How to reinstall Windows: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html
  • Once Windows is installed... leave the internet cable still unplugged!
  • Install your Norton Antivirus+firewall -- reboot afterwards
  • Restore your backups from cd
  • Connect with the internet
  • Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to download and install all the updates/patches
Now you are protected. Block any alert your firewall is giving you if you don't know what it is!
