I'm a very experienced user, a software developer by trade.  Unfortunately on a recent rebuild of my box I was victim of being lazy and clicking next next next.  Well next thing I know I have ShowPass and Search Protect.  If I hadn't of been 1/2 through the millions of updates required by Win 7, I would have blown away the OS and started fresh.  In hindsight I should have.  I've read countless articles on how to remove ShowPass and search protect but nothing gets rid of them completely.  I even purchased Exterminate-It for $29, and while it said it removed them, along with 300+ other items, I still have remnants of the programs.

What I'm trying to get rid of are the programs in the Notification Area.  I've searched the registry and HD and I can't find any trace of the programs, but they both still appear in the Notification Area.

I went thru this article in detail and nothing came up as unusual.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/529178/showpass-malware-removal-nothing-finds-it/

Does anyone know how to get rid of them in my notification area?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions.  I've attached and/or pasted the files here.  Actually it said my post was too long so I'll break it up into several posts.

I feel as though my computer is running sluggishly.  It's a brand-new Dell XPS8700 with an i7, 12GB ram and 3-7200 rpm drives.  It should not be sluggish, and I'm on the verge of an fdisk and re-install.  Maybe you can save me from that - hopefully.  I really appreciate you taking the time to look into this.

Here are the results of the AdwCleaner log file.

I know you said you wanted me to copy/paste the FRST file, but I can't because the contents are too long.  I'm attaching it here instead.

Thanks again for the help.  I ran what you said and have attached the contents.  I'd say the computer is running the same.  For example, after I ran the registry fix and rebooted, as soon as I had a desktop I clicked IE.  Literally about 3-4 minutes later IE opened.  I also clicked the notification area and I still have my networks showing up on my desktop, from hovering over the network icon.

Click the StartBtn.gif button. In the Search box, type Command Prompt, and then, in the list of results, double-click Command Prompt.

at the cursor type:
ipconfig /flushdns <-- (A space between g and / is needed)

ipconfig /release

repeat with
ipconfig /renew

Then hit Enter, type Exit, hit the Enter key.

You may need to run CMD - Command Prompt on Vista - Windows 7/8 with Elevated Privilege

I did as directed and finally got a chance to reboot tonight, even though I know it's not needed for this.  My computer literally gave me a black screen, after I typed in my password, for about 5 minutes.  I was able to hit ctl alt del and get the task manager during the black screen time, but I never got the real desktop for about 5 min.

So either my new machine has issues, or my Win 7/malware box has issues. :(

Did you find any conflicting issues?

If nothing is found then it may just be that your hardware is failing.

The box gets hot and the problem begins.
Check if the fan is working.

I ran sfc /scannow.  It reported "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations".

I'm beginning to wonder if it's hardware.  The box is quiet and the fan is running.  What I come back to is the fact that I didn't have any of these issues, slow to show the desktop etc, as I was building it and installing all the updates.  It came with Win 8.1, which I hate, so I wiped it and installed 7, even though there are literally about 500 updates and countless reboots.  During that time the box seemed fast.  I think I'll wipe it and rebuild it again this weekend.  Such a pain in the butt.  Not only the Windows part, but getting all of my software setup and configured.  Uhg.

Thanks for all your help, I really do appreciate it.  Oh and I know which software did this - Power ISO Upgrade.  I should have just stuck with my old version.  Thanks Power ISO, you POS!
