Hello,

I used to be a regular here and was even studying how to remove viruses in your classes until I had to drop out   :(

So, I haven't been on here in quite a long time but I still remember this is the best place to go for help.

The other night, unable to get a hockey game on tv that I really wanted to watch, a friend suggested I go to a site to view it online, but when I did, all kinds of software started installing on my PC.   Not sure why I even did this as I usually know better, but no use crying over my mistake now... I just want to fix it.

I immediately closed the site and ran Malwarebytes. Ran a scan and it found over 80 issues that it quarantined.

A also uninstalled any software that was showing as having been installed on my PC that evening.  I then also used the Software Removal Tool and it removed a couple more that I was not finding manually.  Chrome was also not showing my personal page settings anymore, and had changed my search choice.  It kept opening on some site I never heard of. So I reset Chrome and finally was able to re-establish my start up pages there and that is working ok now..

However, I am still getting alot of popups and offers to clean my PC (bogus stuff) and have even had a window pop up once saying it was from Chrome and that I needed to update my version of Chrome.  I knew I was up to date on my Chrome version, so not wanting to click on that page at all I used task manager to close it down.

I have run Malwarebytes a few more times in the last few days and each time it keeps finding 1 or 2 more issues and I keep quarantining them.

Another funny thing is, after quarantining my PC shuts down and re-starts.  It does not ask me if I want to re-start now or not...it just shuts down, causing me to lose things I was working on.

Now, I am still getting alot of pop ups.  And every time I open Chrome, Malwarebyte advises it has blocked malicious websites.

I do I clean this once and for all?

I used to have a few friends here but not sure if any are still here   :(  But if any of you see this and remember me, or even if you don't...can you get back to me and advise how to get my computer back to normal?

I am on a pretty new Dell desktop computer

Running Windows 7

Thanks in advance for a prompt reply and looking forward to working with any of you again :)

  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

How is computer doing?

Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Alternate download: http://www.filehippo.com/search?q=java

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: If you're running 64-bit system make sure you install BOTH, 32-bit and 64-bit Java.

Note 3: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

Hi Broni,

Computer is doing great!  All of the popups have stopped.  Thanks so much!

I will do the Java update, it was asking me to do it but so much stuff was trying to install on my system that I wasn't sure what was real and what was malicious.

Now I will feel safe updating the Java.

Again, thanks so much.  I knew this was the right place to go...for the right help... I have missed it  :)

You never did say, do you remember me??  I remember you :)

Yes I do :)

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Launch a quick scan now" link)

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly ((you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix))

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

11. Read:

Hi Broni,

Sorry for the delay in my reply.  Was working all weekend and it was a very busy one.. :P

I have done all of the updates and re-downloaded all of the cleaning tools with the quick launch icons to be kept in a folder on my desktop.

Also installed WOT which I had on my old system and had completely forgotten to install on this one.

Again, thanks so much for all of your help, it was nice to see you again...sorta  ;-)    lol

Take care...  :)
