Hi All--

I have a new Compaq Presario with Windows XP sp2. The computer did not come with a windows installation disc like my last computer, so I ran the compaq recovery cd creator and made a set of discs. I also made a recovery tools cd. The program seemed to run fine while I made these discs. I assume these discs are the same as if I had gotten a Windows installation disc and that if my computer crashes then these are going to put everything back to factory settings. Am I correct? Do I need to test them out to be sure that they work? Is there a way to test them, even?

--Thanks.

My Emachine made 3 recovery disks.
They are 3 copies of the same thing.
It made 3 in case any got damaged or lost.
If I stick one in it acts like an xp cd & offers repair install & full install & cancel.

They restore to factory settings.
You lose all updates from Microsoft if you restore to factory settings & need to get the updates again.
Hopefully you will never need to use one.
Keep them in a safe place.

Fourteen disks? Good grief! That's enough for fourteen operating systems!

For starters, I'd put each disk on the drive and see what's on it. I'm just curious that way. Using Windows explorer, I'd check out the files. Of course, chances are they don't relate to anything normal since sometimes companies bury everything in CAB files. But you might be able to get a clue what's on them.

They shouldn't recover anything unless you leave them in the drive while the computer is restarting. (You don't wanna do that!) But it won't hurt to browse the disks and see if there's anything on them. It may be that the disk maker program backed up all your stuff along with the restore?

Yes.3 disks.
Each is a copy of the other.
All 3 are the same.

With Emachines you get prompted to make the disks at FIRST bootup only.

I use xp home with sp2 OEM installed from the factory.

If you have 14 disks I hope you numbered them in order when you created them...

EDIT--

I visited the Compaq site & it said to use the disks in order.
1 through whatever.
In your case 1-14.
In that order.
Why they need 14 CDs is beyond me...

Ok, yes I numbered the discs, so if ever needed, I do have them in order. Still 14 discs, I hope it backed up everything. I think I will kind of explore the discs just to see if I can figure out what's actually on there.
Thanks again.
