Hello, I have been having issues with what seems to be a virus. Fake Chrome processes (like 5-15 at a time), with a Chrome logo but a seemingly random-generated character name. I've found very similar threads on here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/545472/fake-google-chrome-browserexe-processes/ and the like), but the fixes I've read were custom written for each user. Just like the aforementioned users I've tried Spybot, MalwareBytes, and Avira but they cannot seem to detect it. I've also tried manually deleting the files, and they just regenerate, often in a new folder. From what I've gathered I should post my FRST and Addition logs, not sure if it makes a difference but I did run FRST in safe mode to generate these logs. Any help is greatly appreciated, as I am out of my league here.

Hello! Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums! :welcome:
My name is Georgi and and I will be helping you with your computer problems.

Before we begin, please note the following:

  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me.
  • Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • Please do not run any tools until requested ! The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.
  • Please perform all steps in the order received. If you can't understand something don't hesitate to ask.
  • Again I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so. I will not help you if you do not follow my instructions.

Next please download the following file => and save it to the Desktop.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post it to your reply.

Also can you please temporary disable Avira real-time protection. Check here how:

How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Then go to C:\FRST\Quarantine and right click on the folder, select send to compressed(zip) folder that will make a zipped copy of this folder.

Then please upload it to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=122 so we can examine the files and submit to antivirus companies if needed.
After that please delete the zip file you just created and re-enable Avira.

Also let me know if the problem still persists.

Regards,

Georgi

Alright, I have submitted it. The initial problem seems to be solved for now, no longer popping up with strange processes (THANK YOU!).

Although, now I'm having another issue. I was trying to re-download WinZip as my trial had expired and it wasn't saving properly, it would fail the first time, then on the second time it would save to the desktop but not as an exe or folder. Just the filename with no filetype. I tried to download a winzip alternative and the same thing keeps happening, failure on first download and on second it only saves as "All File Types". Tried again with Downloading Mozilla's Firefox and the same thing happened... Did FRST cause this or is this another lingering symptom of the initial infection?

Hello,

Is the problem occur only in Google Chrome only?

If so please try to reinstall Google Chrome (but make sure that you export your passwords and favorites/bookmarks if you have any) before you proceed wih the steps below.

Please download and install Revo Uninstaller 1.95.
Then please run Revo Uninstaller and select Google Chrome.
Please click Uninstall icon to uninstall the selected program.
Please choose Advanced.
Then click Next and follow the prompts.
Please click Select All and Delete to delete all registry items, folders and files listed by Revo.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so.

Keep in mind that the the free version of Revo has limited compatibility with 64 bit systems.

If Revo failed to list a program then you can try GeekUninstaller or Wise Program Uninstaller instead.

Download and install the latest version of Google Chrome, re-import your passwords and bookmarks and see if the problem still persists.

Regards,

Georgi

Actually, I only ever use internet explorer. That's why the fake chrome processes stood out so clearly. Should I try the same uninstall/reinstall on IE?

Hello,

Since IE is implemented in Windows core on a very deep level this is not applicable for IE (i mean that it is not recommended to use Revo and such to uninstall it). First you can try to reset its settings to default. Check the link below:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737/

Let me know about the results.

Regards,

Georgi

Reset IE to defaults and rebooted, no change. All file downloads fail on first try, and on second try it lets me DL them but usually with "_exe" (Note the underscore rather than a dot) on the end and saved only as "All File Types". Upon attempting to open, it prompts me for a program from my list that can open such a file. Also, it apparently fails to set Google as my default search engine (Through automatic means from the blue prompt on google.com, manual works fine...). Included are screenshots of the latter... I have had no issues with my internet connectivity.

Hi,

Please re-run FRST (make sure that Addition.txt is checked before you press the scan button) and post both logs in your next reply.

Georgi

Hello,

The logs are clean. Can you please uninstall Avira SearchFree Toolbar and and see if the problem still persists?

Also please update Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Player to the latest versions.

Adobe Flash Player 15 ActiveX (HKLM-x32\...\Adobe Flash Player ActiveX) (Version: 15.0.0.167 - Adobe Systems Incorporated)
Adobe Reader 9.5.0 (HKLM-x32\...\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-A95000000001}) (Version: 9.5.0 - Adobe Systems Incorporated)

Your Adobe Flash Player is out of date!

Older versions may have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Uninstall the old version using the following tool

software.gif Please download and instal the latest version from here => Adobe Flash Player 15.0.0.189 Final for (Internet Explorer)

Reboot the computer and see if the problem still persists.

Sorry for the delay, uninstalled Spy Hunter 4, Avira SearchFree Toolbar, and updated Adobe Reader. Tried to update flash but when I go to the official site I do not get a "Run" option, only open which does nothing and save which leads me to the existing problem of EXEs being only downloadable as "All file types" and unusable...

Cannot download fixlist.txt, Open does nothing, cancel does nothing, and save leads me to the "All file types" conundrum except the save button does nothing. Could something in my OS be somehow damaged? I got the computer about 2 years ago secondhand and do not have the original OS disks to attempt a repair.

Hello,

I doubt that your OS is damaged. This seems to be a problem with Internet Explorer 11 itself.

Can you run Internet Exporer this way and let me know if the problem still persists:

From the start menu => type in iexplore.exe -extoff and hit Enter.

If no joy then run Internet Explorer normally and then from  Tools => Internet Options => Security => uncheck Enable protected mode, restart the browser and see if the issue is fixed.

Also maybe it's a good idea to downgrade Internet Explorer to version 10 and see if that helps:

Let me know about the results.
