I am using Word 97 on a Windows XP (SP3) computer.  I want to spell check documents written in German.  I've obtained the German language dictionary from a plausible source.  I've placed the file in the correct folder (...\program files\microsoft shared\proof).  I've tried all the settings that are suggested to get the spell checker to work:

Tools | Languages | Set Language | [German] | Default | OK or Close -- however, changing the default does not work.  The default stays on English.

Tools | Options | Spelling and Grammar | Dictionaries | Add dictionary (naming the file I inserted) and set its language

But all that happens when I spell check is the spell checker works fine, but in English, not in German.  I guess the problem is with the Set Language feature, which doesn't allow me to change the default language.  Why wouldn't it?

Thanks for any  ideas.  (No, I do not want to use a more recent version of Word.)
