Im hoping this is an update issue but am not really sure... Normally I put my laptop into hibernate or sleep mode when it's not in use. Over the last few days I've hit sleep shut the lid and have come back to it being on the start-up repaid screen. It will not let me 1) system restore (says files are not present) 2) start up repair encounters an error 3) memory check comes back negative. I've shut it down, waited and when I restart it; it freezes at the windows start-up with a quick flash of BSOD and continues to try and reboot taking me to the start up recovery and the process is repeated. I thought I was able to access windows through safe-mode but it must've been a fluke. Worked once when I tried again a few days later it would do the same thing.

I also have an update waiting that is for windows but will not install. I get the error code 80073712; I tried running the system update readiness tool and had no luck with that. I have run spybot, malwarebytes, ad-aware and my antivirus; cleaned everything up that they found and it is still doing this.

I also thought maybe it was overheating so I cleaned all air vents and insides with air and while it is definitely running quieter and cooler it did not help the issue at hand. Any help would be appreciated it. Specs for laptop: Acer Aspire 7736z, windows 7 home premium 64-bit

Hello there,

I found a similar topic here:  http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_update/how-to-fix-error-code-80073712-windows-component/29102eca-67ff-4724-837a-74289ec37498

Hope this helps!

Thank you! I actually visited that site before posting on here; hoping I could fix this myself. I ran the SFC check and did not see anything that said it fixed something. It looked okay. I tried to run update readiness but once again; it freezes on the 'download hotfix update' I let it got for a few hours last night and it never moved past initialization 1of1. Stayed at 0% the whole time.

Hi, have you tried running hard drive diagnostic and RAM test if your laptop comes with these features on BIOS?

THank you! I have just run a RAM test on it and it came up empty handed. Nothing was wrong. I have not ran the hard drive diagnostic; as I am not sure how on here.

Can you check the BIOS menu options for any hard drive test? Just in case also, a new windows update causing havoc on some systems that may be related to your problem. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/552947/microsoft-yanks-botched-patch-kb2949927-re-issues-kb2952664/#entry3513401

I checked out BIOS and did not see anything for a test for the HD. There was only an option to enter a HDD password. Checking out the link you gave me now.

EDIT:

I uninstalled both of those update and tried to install the update that has been giving me issues. It still will not install. The update waiting installation is KB2978092.

Is it an optional or a recommended update? Did you try Startup Repair (press F8 to go to advanced menu)  or check disk for error as found from the given microsoft forum?

It says recommended important update. Start up repair will not work and the same with system restore. That's what Im really concerned with (besides the obvious BSOD) since those two options are always nice to have in a bind. I've done check disk though and it's all clear.

What happens with this part or error message appearing?

Before I only got a 'start up repair cannot fix windows' error and it wouldn't finish scanning. I tried to boot up this morning and got a 'hard disk cannot be found' message. Got it booted after 5 restarts and a shut down though.

Try going to command prompt in advanced boot menu and type chkdsk C: /f /r .

I ran what you suggested but was not around when it finished. This may sound dumb, but is there a log file or something that I am missing to see if anything was fixed?

Download and run Listchkdskresult http://www.bleepstatic.com/fhost/uploads/3/listchkdskresult.exe

Copy paste the result if there was a successful repair done. Alternately, you can also use right-click C: -Properties - Tools - Error checking and tick both boxes.

Here's the results; doesn't look to me that anything was wrong but maybe I'm missing something.
