This continued from the previous thread I posted at
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/552001/spontaneous-multi-program-failurerestart-problem/

I did a repair install of windows 7 with an In place upgrade, and everything seemed to be working fine so I installed all the important windows updates and drivers that became uninstalled (e.g. Intel rapid storage, rapid start, intel usb 3.0 monitor, Lenovo energy management driver, bios upgrade, all under the software support page on Lenovo's site). It seemed to be working okay for a day, but when I came back today after installing a few optional Microsoft security update fixes, it started acting up again. An error window would keep appearing upon startup (wmpnsfg.exe system error - click ok to terminate program) and various programs will not launch (chrome, iTunes immediately crashes, event viewer and even windows diagnostics will not launch). Most recently, BSODs would appear shortly after trying to launch event viewer Saying "A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated" with STOP: 0x000000F4 ". I have restored it to when it was still working well with no effects, and launching safe mode still does not allow app launching or event viewer launch. I really can't figure what the source of this problem is, please help! I need my laptop for school so it is very urgent.

Your previous MiniToolBox results appeared to show you were simultaneously running two anti-virus programs at the same time: both AVG 2013 and Microsoft Security Essentials.  That will definitely cause serious system problems, and could even allow a virus to slip in while the two anti-virus programs are fighting each other.

Therefore, if you still have more than one anti-virus program installed now, recommend you fully uninstall both of them, then reinstall one and only one.

P.S.  I think the time setting on your computer is off by 15 minutes.

Hey Torvald,
As far as I know, AVG 2013 has been removed for quite some time. I believe what you see is just the remnants of the install, If I recall I used AVG remover tool too, but I'll try to use it again to try to completely remove it.

Edit: I've been trying to perform another in place repair install but without success, as it keeps crashing midway through due to mscorwks.dll crashing. I am out of ideas besides completely reformatting my computer.

Edit 2: Here's an updated miniToolbox I managed to run:

Since your Windows 7 repair install didn't work, and your efforts to clean reinstall Windows is failing, perhaps you can try a factory reset to original condition instead.

Here is  your Lenovo laptop's user manual:   https://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/user_guides/u310_u410_ug_en.pdf

Here are the relevant sections on how to reset to factory new condition, using their special NOVO button on the side of your laptop:

Left-side view

U410/U410 Touch

Novo button When the computer is off, press this button to start the

Lenovo OneKey Recovery system or the BIOS setup utility, or to enter the boot menu.

Note: For details, see “Chapter 5. Lenovo OneKey Recovery system” on page 37.

There is a NOVO button on the left-side of your Lenovo laptop, next to the fan exhaust opening (opposite end from the USB ports).  Sorry, but this description is the best i can do, since the image from the Lenovo user manual resists being copied on-line.

Chapter 5. Lenovo OneKey Recovery system

The Lenovo OneKey Recovery system is software designed to back up and

restore your computer. You can use it to restore the system partition to its

original status in case of a system failure. You can also create user backups

for easy restoration as required.

Backing up the system partition

You can back up the system partition to an image file. To back up the system

partition:

1 Press the Novo button to start the Lenovo OneKey Recovery system.

2 Click System Backup.

3 Select a back-up location and click Next to start the backup.

Restoring

You can choose to restore the system partition to its original status or to a

previously created back-up point. To restore the system partition:

1 Press the Novo button to start the Lenovo OneKey Recovery system.

2 Click System Recovery. The computer will restart to the recovery environment.

3 Follow the on-screen instructions to restore the system partition to its

original status or to a previously created back-up point.

If Windows cannot be started, then follow the steps below to start the Lenovo

OneKey Recovery system:

1 Shut down the computer.

2 Press the Novo button. From the Novo button menu, select the Lenovo

OneKey Recovery system and press Enter.

So I've done the one key recovery, but now a few problems have sprung up again. I'm not sure if its a virus (as I didn't pick up anything on MBAM or MSE) but my chrome is acting up again where it'll crash immediately upon launch, as well as there being an unopenable task manager (c:\windows\system32\taskmgr.exe is not a valid win32 app) even though the application is clearly there. I did uninstall the McAfee that was automatically put on my PC post-recovery, but not with the McAfee removal tool, before I installed MSE, so im not sure if these conflicts came up as a result. There are already several errors that I can't fix from the sfc scan now (including task manager), and I've tried to instead do a scan now on boot using the command prompt from recovery disc, only to find that the system recovery won't detect my OS. What should my next step be?

Hmmm, going back to a factory reset normally works better than this.

Can you describe the errors that the sfc /scannow was not able to correct?

When you say: "and I've tried to instead do a scan now on boot using the command prompt from recovery disc, only to find that the system recovery won't detect my OS." do you mean that your system is not booting into Windows 7 any more?

Here's the files that it won't fix, probably because of my abnormal partitioning/unrecognizability of the OS right now.

The situation is currently thusly and strange:
I can boot into windows 7 normally, and when I checked diskmgmt it showed this: http://i.imgur.com/whnTaZg.png ( I set c:\ to be active)

I looked into the use of sfc /scannow and they said it may be more efficient to do it on boot, meaning I use a bootable USB with windows 7 repair, and then from there go into "repair computer" and use the command prompt there to do sfc /scannow. What happens is when I run it there, it keeps saying "windows resource is pending changes and requires a restart before SFC can be run" even after multiple restarts, and I also notice that when I go into system recovery, the program does not detect any OS installations (no disk selection to repair), which is strange since mine is working mostly fine. I ran diskpart to see only 1 volume (disk 0) displayed, and I run bootrec /scanos to find that it does not detect any OS installations, which is weird. I tried to ignore the no disk displayed and run Startup repair, but that only managed to mess up my bootable USB windows copy, so I had to reformat the usb. I'm not very knowledgeable on all this booting/partitioning so I'm not sure what's next. I believe that my D:\ SSD should be loading startup files for quick boots while my windows files are in c:\, but I'm not sure if that's the case anymore post-reset.

Edit: I am able to successfully post this using my IE, but just my chrome keeps crashing instantaneously.

Edit 2: I ran diskpart in normal boot, and came back with more regular results:

Volume ###  Ltr  Label        Fs     Type        Size     Status     Info
 ----------  ---  -----------  -----  ----------  -------  ---------  --------
Volume 0     E                NTFS   Partition    200 MB  Healthy
Volume 1     C   Windows7_OS  NTFS   Partition    420 GB  Healthy    System
Volume 2     D   LENOVO       NTFS   Partition     25 GB  Healthy
 Volume 3     F   CORSAIR      FAT32  Removable     14 GB  Healthy

Four partitions listed under volume 1: 1 - 200mb (primary), *2-420Gb (primary), 3-25Gb (primary), 4-19Gb (OEM)

I don't know if all of these partitions are necessary/correct.

Am really surprised to see so many errors after you've performed a system restore.

I think I'm out of my league here, especially with the multi-partitioning of your disk drive, so we'll need to wait for someone more experienced to jump in with further advice.

Ah I see, I appreciate the help anyways, Torvald!

Edit: Manually replaced corrupt taskmgr.exe with one extracted from repair disc, task manager seems to work now. Still a dozen corrupt files present.

Edit 2: I was scrolling around different threads, found that other people had trouble with some windows updates causing computer haywire, so I uninstall kb:2952664 as a precaution. Here's the list of failed updates for my computer, I don't know if this relates to my problem. http://i.imgur.com/TxIpu2j.png

As Another update: two other symptoms I seem to be noticing is that MSE real time protection seems to be shutting off spontaneously, and sometimes having trouble restarting the service (e.g. getting "unable to start service" errors). Especially when I run full scans, it always seems to trigger an error, where it crashed halfway when I ran it in safe mode, and spontaneously stopped the real time service when I scanned normally.

Symptom 2 is that perfmon and associated programs have trouble launching, throwing errors like "MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap in might not have been installed correctly."

Edit: Although this just happened once, for the first time today, I booted up today to find a black blank desktop with a Location Not Available error " C:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location." I rebooted and it loaded fine again, it was just a random unsettling error but I don't know if this helps.

I am desperate for help! My computer has been barely usable for over a week now!
