Hi

! This is very important !: Update your Windows. Doing this will make your computer more secure. Please visit Windows Update (follow this link: http://www.windowsupdate.com) to update your Windows. Follow the instructions on the screen. You may have to visit more then once Windows Update to install all updates.
Not updating Windows will leave your computer vulnerable to malware and attacks.

Install Service Pack 1 and all critical updates.

After the installation of the last update make sure you REBOOT the computer, run HijackThis again and post a new log please.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

OK, Windows is updated (XP Home Edition) including a number of security updates as well as a few "Critical updates". Service pack 1 was installed January of 2003. It is now asking if I want to update to Service Pack 2. I have heard numerous reason NOT to update to SP2. Do I HAVE to install SP2?

My HiJackThis log now looks like this...

You are running an outdated version of HijackThis.. Delete the copy you have and download the latest version of HijackThis!: Download here HJT 1.98.2. Save it on your Desktop. You will need now to unzip hijackthis.exe to a permanent folder, such as c:\hjt . This has to be done as HijackThis creates backups. You may need to use these backups.

First create a new folder:
A. Click My Computer icon on your desktop
B. Click C: drive
C. Click the File menu --> New --> Folder, a folder "New folder" will be created.
D. Rename it HJT

Unzip hijackthis.exe to the c:\HJT folder.
Do not run HijackThis from your desktop.

Please post a new hijackthis log.

Service pack 1 was installed January of 2003

Your hijackthis log shows no sign of Service Pack 1.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

I've updated to HJT v 1.98.2 and started a new folder under C:\HJT.

I double checked with windows update that I did infact update to Service Pack 1. It states that I successfully updated Jan 9 2003 from Windows Update Website. Should I try reinstalling SP1? If so, how?

My HJT log now reads...

Hi

Please uninstall from Add\Remove Programs:
mscman
KeenValue
Windows AdTools

You are using Kazaa. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. I strongly recommend that you remove it. Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ If you opt to remove it, first use Add/Remove Program to remove it

You have Wild Tangent installed. Wild Tangent collects information about you and your usage. The advertisements may also contain pornographic or other material that you might find inappropriate. You can follow these instructions to uninstall it: No. 8 - Uninstallation .

Click on start, then run, and type services.msc and press the OK button. When the Services control panel opens, scroll through the list looking for a service called ISEXEng. If that service exists, double-click on it, and change the startup to disabled and stop the service.

Next, open Notepad, copy and paste the below contents in the quote box and "Save As" removeit.reg. In the "Save as type" select: All files and save the file to your desktop

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ISEXENG]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\ISEXEng]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ISEXENG]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\ISEXEng]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ISEXENG]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ISEXEng]

We will use this above registry file later in the fix.

Download Ad-aware SE 1.05: here
Install it. When you get the last screen, with the "Finish" button and 3 options, uncheck those three items.
Open AdAware and click the "Check for updates now" link. Close AdAware. Don't use it yet.

Download System Security Suite here:
System Security Suite Download & Tutorial. Unzip it to your desktop.
Install the program. Don't use it yet.

Please print or copy these instructions because you are not able to access the Internet in SafeMode.

Make sure you are set to show hidden files and folders:
A. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
B. Click the View tab.
C. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
D. Uncheck Hide extensions for known filetypes and Hide protected operating system files.
How to see hidden files in Windows

REBOOT into SafeMode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup: Starting your computer in Safe mode

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

Lengthy delay in posting a new log due to despondency once I was told that I'd have to remove Kazaa from my computer. I'd rather swallow bullets then do that. It took me two weeks to come to terms with it, research another file sharing program and then actually remove Kazaa. It was like a death in the family. The wake is next Tuesday at St Marys Church of Illegal Downloads here in San Diego. Anyone can attend.

I very carefully followed your directions and.... It all went PERFECTLY! I am utterly shocked at how easy and effectively your suggestions worked. Just unreal. Truely. My computer is just humming along. Just a few minutes ago I had IE open for the first time in well over a year and not a single pop-up has occured, not a hitch in its step. Just lean, mean comuting.

Here is my new log...
