I have 2 computers, disabled and in a corner. one with an encrypted partition table. Using one brother's computer now, we noticed a significant slowdown over 8 months. Just today joined BleepingComputer.com and have gone through the steps to (4) Ad-Aware and Spybot - Removed over 11000 objects! Shutdown used to take 10 minutes or so, now less than 1 minute... A good Start in regaining a useful machine. Thanks.

Adware and Spyware can drastically slow down your computer, among other things. Keep updating and than scanning with both applications on a regular basis. If you have the time, there are several excellent Tutorials that discuss getting the most use of these two applications, as well as others about spyware and adware in general.
