Mod Edit:  Split from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/551340/avg-pc-tuneup-killed-my-laptop/  - Hamluis.

Well, interesting enough to mention, I have been running AVG free on all of my machines for years. I just recently bought a "licensed full copy" and installed it on this machine. I have had multiple BSOD crashes today. I get the popup that  Windows has crapped itself and we don't know why!

Any input would be appreciated.

susdy, you may be best off creating a Topic of your own, because the symptoms are different on your computer than that of the OP.

You went from running free editions "for years", as you've stated above, evidently with no major issues and you activate a retail copy & the issues began. That, I hope was a lesson learned, problem is, I've seen this software sold not only online, but also at national retailers such as WalMart also. Right with all of the junk security software, when I was looking for a air duster.

With all of the negative opinions of this type of software, I find it surprising after all of these years that consumers are still purchasing this junk. One of the main reasons why I refuse to recommend AVG, even during the spells it's a otherwise good security tool, is because this registry or optimization tool is included. The consumer has to take it slow and make sure that AVG PC Tuneup isn't included with the install of the security software.

If it's possible, you need to return the software for a refund. Hopefully you can get that.  :)

Best of Luck,

Cat

Edited - Hamluis.

Performing full disc images weekly and keeping important data off of the 'C' drive as generated can be the best defence against Malware/Ransomware attacks, as well as a wide range of other issues.

Your post isn't clear...licensed full copy of what?  AVG 2014?

In any case...

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Ok, let's try it this way. I didn't see in the instructions to "copy" and then "paste" but that is what I have done here. I hope this is what you needed. I am also at a different location and notice that this tool checks the router also so that will be different here. The problems continue and I was able to stop the crashes last night by not having MS Outlook running. I think it is related to Outlook somehow. I checked for updates and always keep my machines updated.

I also see AVG Zen listed in the programs and I have tried to remove it several times. It was accidently installed when I thought it was an AVG update. Any ideas there? Or should I do a new post?

Steve

Try using Revo Uninstaller to remove the AVG Zen.

I don't believe you intentionally loaded two antivirus, but the information below will explain why this could be part of your problem.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Using more than one anti-virus program is not advisable. Why? The primary concern with doing so is due to Windows resource management and significant conflicts that can arise especially when they are running in real-time protection mode simultaneously. Even if one of them is disabled for use as a stand-alone on demand scanner, it can affect the other and cause conflicts. Anti-virus software components insert themselves deep into the operating systems core where they install kernel mode drivers that load at boot-up regardless of whether real-time protection is enabled or not. Thus, using multiple anti-virus solutions can result in kernel mode conflicts causing system instability, catastrophic crashes, slow performance and waste vital system resources. When actively running in the background while connected to the Internet, each anti-virus may try to update their definition databases at the same time. As the programs compete for resources required to download the necessary files this often can result in sluggish system performance or unresponsive behavior.

I suggest that you uninstall each of the following:

AVG PC TuneUp 2014 (en-US) (x32 Version: 14.0.1001.519 - AVG) Hidden
AVG Zen (Version: 1.0.329 - AVG Technologies) Hidden

FMW 1 (Version: 1.0.230 - AVG Technologies) Hidden
Any version of AVG antivirus...replace with Microsoft Security Essentials  as we try to eliminate confusion.

IMO...your BSODs can probably be attributed to having the above programs installed and "functioning"..

After removal of above, I suggest running the chkdsk /r command on your Windows partition...followed by running the sfc /scannow command.

Then...run the system for awhile, see if problems return.

Thanks Louis;

I have followed your recommendations up to the SFC Scan. I am traveling and don't have my installation disk with me. I will do that when I get home Monday. I removed everything related to AVG using the Revo Uninstaller (should I keep that installed or will I eventually have to buy it?) and that really seemed to work. The system did crash two or three times again while I was trying to install the Microsoft Security Essentials but it finally got through that and updated and ran a scan. It has been running for a couple hours now and seems to be stable again. I will next request a refund from AVG and also file through PayPal.

Your patience and help are greatly appreciated.

Thanks to dc3 for the Revo link. That is a nice tool.

Well I just had another system crash. I noticed that my Recycle Bin was pretty loaded and when I right clicked I noticed that I still had the choice of Tuneup Utilities "shredder" or something. So I did a system search for "Tune Up" and found 2 application files that I deleted. Then I searched with Revo and found some more related stuff that I removed. Then the crash occurred. Running ok now. Maybe a fluke or even normal after running Revo Uninstaller.

Another crash. I removed the SD card from the drive when I had a "Readyboost" problem. Could readyboost be part of it? Also during all of this when the crashes stopped this afternoon my desktop also changed. It went to "align to grid" and I tried to do a restore but all of my restore points were gone. I manually repositioned my Icons.

Empty the Recycle bin so that all of those items will be completely gone.

Readyboost tracks all file activity at boot time, this accumulates, including updates and spyware scans, unless Readyboot is set to circular logging mode.

To set the Readyboot to the circular logging mode do the following.

Click on the Start orb to open the Start Menu, then click on Control Panel.

In the Control Panel click on Administrative Tools, then click on Performance Monitor.

Expand the left side tree entry for Data Collections Sets.

Highlight Startup Event Trace Sessions.

Click on the ReadyBoot line to open it.

Click on the File tabb, then select the circular option.

Click on Apply, then OK.  Restart the computer.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Well that seems to have fixed the readyboost issues. I have however had about four more crashes. Should I post another Minitoolbox report after the next crash?
