Good Evening- I believe that my Dell laptop has become infected with the dreaded powerlik virus. I am running Vista Home Premium service pack 2 32 bit OS. My antivirus is Norton. I noticed the  laptop slow down and looked at the proccess tab in task manager saw muultiple dll.host.exe. I get popups from Norton to the effect of Fake App Attack: Fake Browser Update 2  Trojan: Powerlik Activity Adclicker.

I have run full scans both in Safe Mode as well as regular booting. I have deleted my temp files( over 45k items).

I have done a System Restore, once. I now realize that I have a much larger problem than I had first thought.

I tried to download Roguekiller last night but my pc told me that my security settings would not allow it.

I am ready, willing and able to assist you in helping me.

Please let me know what I should do.

Many Thanks

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.

I attempted to start the process last night. At first the computer gave me a popup that it could not download Securitycheck.exe. I attempted a retry several times, and at one point it "tried" to download and when I tried to save it to desktop, it failed. I tried it a few more times and now, for the past 9 hours it shows resuming at the bottom of the screen. I gather that I should just reboot the machine and start the whole process again?

I just cntrl/alt/delete to bring up the task manager. I got a popup that stated Your current security settings do not allow this file to download. I had changed my security settings to allow downloads, so I will need some guidance on that. Thanks.

I was aware that the Download/Enable needed to be clicked. I have been working on this for over 5 hours, but still get same results. The laptop will not allow security check to be downlloaded.

9:08- Enable then Apply, got popup This will put your computer at risk; I clicked ok. Then reopened Security settings and was still Enabled. Restarted PC now Apoint.exe popup stating Failed to load launcher dll. I clicked ok. Opened up IE, not connected for a few minutes, then checked settings and saw that Downloads was Disabled. Then got a Blue Screen and the machine restarted itself. Upon restarting, got same Apoint.exe error, opened up IE and got a Windows error Last session stopped unexpectedly Do you want to restore. I xd out that popup. Now got a Norton Autofix for error 8506.421. Got a windows popup Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown and I did click Check for solution. It then brought up Norton Autofix again, I canceled that Autofix. I then went to Security Settings and Downloads showed Disabled. I enabled it and got popup Are you sure you want to change settings for zone, I clicked yes and then OK. I then went to make sure that it was still enabled, and it wasn't. I enabled, got the are you sure popup, clicked yes. IE not responding, clicked Recover webpage, page came up and I went to security settings and it showed Enabled. I did not restart computer this time.I went to settings again to ensure that it was enabled, it wasnt. I enabled again, clecked OK to the Are yu sure popup. Went to bleepingcomputer, got popup that Google Drive had stopped working, I closed that popup. Logging into website, checking that still Enabled, it was disabled. Why? Enabled it again, clicked on Security Check, got a warning asking me if I wanted to run or save Security Check, chose Save As Desktop, then got Security Check.exe couldn't be downloaded. I show that I have Downloads nabled, but still cannot get Security Check.exe. to load.

What should my next attempt be?

Thanks

Ok, please don't give up on me. I have been spending a lot of time on this, and I have to be patient because the computer is running so slowly.

I have successfully downloaded and run Security Check. Now I have spent hours attempting to run Farbar Service Scanner. It gives me a cannot download css.exe. I have Downloads Enabled, and the AV disabled. It shows 10%-17% downloaded, then says cannot be downloaded. I actually saw a popup that said that it was downloaded, but I believe that that was a false message.

What would you advise.

Thanks Again.
