One of the work PCs is blighted by this delayed write failure error. After a while of usage, it will pop up with that message, and then the PC will be unusable until it is restarted. The hard drive light will become solid and you can hear the hard drive thrashing. Any ideas how to fix this? Is it indicative of a physical failure of the hard disk?

See this Microsoft Knowledge Base. You can also use Seatools for Windows to diagnose the disk and see if it passes the tests.
