winxp sometimes does not give me the desktop

when i boot the computer, at times i don't get the desktop. i get the windows logo then i get the welcome screen. there it locks. nothing happens. i waited for the desktop to come but failed . i then forced shutdown the computer. then sometimes i get the desktop in the next bootup itself. but sometimes i don;t. then i force it to shut down for the second, sometimes for the third time then in the next boot up i get the desktop. i dont know why this happens. it happens only now and then not regularly. what to do? pls suggest. thanks

How old is this system and when was the last time the hard drive was reformatted and everything reloaded? Right now I'd recommend going to the HDD manufacturer's site and getting a hardware diagnostic so you can run it and determine the status of your HDD. I would also be saving up to buy a replacement drive in the near future.
