Well...I would uninstall Blue Stacks and all of Zone Alarm...replace ZA with the Windows Firewall...remove all toolbars/add-ons...and see if problems go away.  ZA has been known to cause problems on some systems for years now, so it won't hurt to test and see if that's the case here.

It appears your hard drive is beginning to fail, I highly recommend backing up all of your data, and then running a diagnostic.

Here is the report for your drive (from speccy), SMART is reporting a warning, even though the attributes say "good" this does not always mean the drive is ok. The error is most likely due to the reallocated blocks of which you have 38.

What a bad block will cause: random freezes or read errors (your drive reported read errors as well). The reason bad blocks and slow blocks cause issues is that windows will try to read data from that slow or bad block infinitely long until it gets the data, if software or a file is written to the bad block, this causes a freeze. Hopefully after windows reads the data (if it can) it will mark the block bad and a chkdsk should reallocate that block (move the data to a good block and add the bad block to the black list).

To verify the drive is having issues I am going to post a diagnostic test you can run below in a new post, I recommend you backup any data you can not afford to lose prior to running the test, a failing drive may fail suddenly and running the diagnostic will stress the drive which may cause it to fail.

Please read these instructions carefully:

If a hard drive has a smart status warning or the drive is questionable this test may be of use NOTE this test does not work with AHCI or Raid sata operation. It must be done with IDE, ATA, or compatibility mode:

Before running this test it would be a good idea to backup any data that you cannot afford to lose. This test uses the hard drive at 100%. If the drive is failing or has problems it is possible for the drive to fail suddenly especially during heavy use as this test will do. It is unlikely but still I recommend backing files up to be safe. Here are the instructions to run the test:

The first step will be to burn MHDD to a disc as an image (cd preferably). MHDD Can be found here: http://hddguru.com/software/2005.10.02-MHDD/  Click the Last version of MHDD, CDROM iso-image download and burn this file directly to a disc.

TO CHANGE SATA OPERATION: (You may need to use your keyboard arrow keys and enter key if you can not click to change settings).

After burning the disc, restart the laptop and start tapping f2 or f1 or delete right away to get into the bios. There you should see System Configuration, expand that by clicking the + button (or using your arrow keys and enter key). In that list there should be something called Sata operation. (Sata Operation may also be by itself in that first screen list)

Click on sata operation and take note of the current setting to the right it will probably be set to AHCI it will need to be switched back to this after MHDD is done running. Select ATA, compatibility or ide mode and then click apply. Save and exit the bios, or if apply was the only option you can use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart.

COMMON BOOT MENU/BIOS keys: https://support.fixmestick.com/hc/en-us/articles/201577043-How-to-get-to-your-Boot-Menu-or-your-BIOS-settings

Now with the burned disc in the drive after a restart, start tapping (F12 Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo), (F9 HP), or (Esc HP, Samsung, Sony) on the keyboard (or change your boot options to boot to cd/dvd first). This will bring up the boot options menu. Select cd/dvd/cd-rw drive and hit enter.

If this worked correctly and booted to mhdd you should see a screen that says Microsoft windows 98 startup menu. You can let the timer run out or just hit enter on option (2 . Start computer without SCSI support).

Now you should see a screen with numbers, most of these will not have any device listed behind them but one number should for example on my dell computer number 6 has WDC WD1600BEVT-75A23T0… and at the end a number in white which is the size of the drive.

Example: If your drive is a 500gb I would expect that number in white to be somewhere around 500,107,862,016 or close to. Find the correct drive to test then on the keyboard type the number in front of the drive (in my case it was 6) and then hit enter.

Now you should have a screen with MHDD> and a blinking cursor.

Now hit F4 on the keyboard 2 times and this will start scanning the hard drive.

You should be able to see the computer start scanning, each block represents 255 sectors (130560 bytes) on the hard drive. What we are looking for will show up on the right side of the screen.

There is a list on the right which shows numbers:

<3

<10

<50

<150ms

Etc…

Anything below the <150ms is a slow sector or a problem sector. Slow sectors <500 or >500 will slow down the computer. If there are a lot of these one after another (several 1000 or more) the drive should probably be replaced. Also if you have any at the end that were marked as UNC this means the drive has uncorrectable errors and the hard drive should probably be replaced.

Basically if you have any sectors that are below <150 (green) let me know and if possible the total number of them.

If all of the sectors were ok and fell within the range of:

<3

<10

<50

<150ms

Then the hard drive is ok, if there are only a few that are slow <500 or >500 the hard drive should be ok to use.

NOTE: that if there are many slow sectors one after another or you start having error after error the drive is in bad shape and I recommend ending the test. To end the test hit the Esc key.

After you are done testing you will need to go back into the bios by restarting the computer and tapping F2, F1, Delete (or whatever key gets you into bios). Go back to Sata Operation and change it back to the default which probably was AHCI.

Then restart and the computer should boot again.

(If you are getting a blue screen and the computer restarts go back into the bios and confirm that Sata Operation is set to what it was before changing it to IDE, ATA, or compatibility).

The hard drive is not beginning to fail.  I just got this Dell computer brand new a year ago.  I don't feel real comfortable running that stress test.

The hard drive is not beginning to fail.  I just got this Dell computer brand new a year ago.  I don't feel real comfortable running that stress test.

I hear this all the time, however I really recommend not ignoring this warning especially if you have valuable data on the hard drive. Hard drives are mechanical parts that fail extremely frequently. When I worked in retail, I encountered at least 50 bad hard drives a week. This represented about 30-40% of the business I did. Older drives seemed to be more reliable than the newer drives in my experience.

To give you some examples of what happened in retail:

I have seen drives bad off the shelf, I frequently saw and still see drives fail after 6 months or less from "new" state. I have seen a fall of only 4 inches destroy a drive while it was running. In the past 2 months where I work a 2 desktops were simply tipped over while running which destroyed both drives. Hard drives are mechanical with many moving parts, they are destined to fail. They are extremely sensitive to gforces while they are operating. One kid brought in a desktop that he slammed his hand on the top of out of anger, the drive was destroyed. What happens to them?: The platter is spinning at 7200rpm's in most modern hard drives, the head that reads the data is so small it would require a microscope to see clearly, if a hard drive is bumped hard enough while running, that head can slam into the platter, instantly causing bad blocks where the head hit the platter and possibly destroying the head itself. Not always is it physical damage that causes drive failure, they are spinning, moving mechanical parts, which fail on their own over time. Sometimes they last years, sometimes days.

Your hard drive is showing smart warnings, I highly suggest you read what S.M.A.R.T is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

The symptoms you are having are very consistant with a drive that is beginning to have bad blocks at random. SMART data seems to point toward this being the case.

I recommend you run a hard drive diagnostic at some point or take it to a shop that can.

The specific part to read on that wiki pages is this:

05 0x05 Reallocated Sectors Count
12px-Dark_Green_Arrow_Down.svg.png
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks that sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and reallocated sectors are called "remaps". The raw value normally represents a count of the bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate. This allows a drive with bad sectors to continue operation; however, a drive which has had any reallocations at all is significantly more likely to fail in the near future.[3] While primarily used as a metric of the life expectancy of the drive, this number also affects performance. As the count of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to become worse because the drive head is forced to seek to the reserved area whenever a remap is accessed. If sequential access speed is critical, the remapped sectors can be manually marked as bad blocks in the file system in order to prevent their use.

At the very least, I would recommend you backup your data frequently. You can follow hamluis's suggestions as well.

What is this that's popping up in the log?.... LMS Service lost connection to HECI driver.   I read something about increasing the maximum log size to handle this?

Also what about just running a chkdsk?

What is the best way to back up my data?

Thanks

This appears to be an intel device, (LMS Service lost connection to HECI driver). I am not familiar with that specific problem, you can go to dell's website and download the lastest driver for the intel chipset, this might fix the problem.

You can go directly to dell's driver download page here: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Products/?app=drivers

Then enter your service tag and you should be able to get the most up to date drivers there.

For backups, use an external drive or better yet 2 (for redundancy).

As far as what to backup: it really depends on what software you are using, generally backing up the entire users folder should get all of your personal data. Some very old software stores data in program files. Some users store data all over. You can use the copy and paste method in windows explorer to copy folders to another drive.

Do you recommend any particular external drive?  Also would a chkdsk do anything?

Chkdsk will remap bad blocks and potentially help with the freezing issue, if there are enough spare blocks to replace the current bad blocks. You can run a chkdsk quite easily:

In your start menu type in cmd, right click on the command prompt box in the start menu and select "run as administrator" then in the new black window type in:  chkdsk /f C: then hit enter. It may warn you that the disk is locked and then ask if you would like to run chkdsk the next time the computer is restarted, type in y and hit enter, then reboot the computer and wait (don't hit any keys) and chkdsk will start automatically.

There is a space between the k and / and another space between the f and C

I ran it.  Is there anyway to get a log from that so that you can view if it altered the blocks?

The chkdsk /r command is the one to run...it's the only command that attempts to reclaim file data from bad sectors.
