Sorry about wall of text but its a pretty deep problem

This problem started about 2 weeks after I built my PC. One day, it just went poof and turned itself off. 3 seconds later, it automatically turns itself back on. I went into my windows and turned off the setting that means it automatically restarts after power loss, but it will still turn on on its own.

I managed to fix this issue for about a month by opening it up, just fiddling about (things like pushing cables like CPU power and mobo power) and then I unplugged it from my surge protector and into my wall socket.

It was absolutely fine for a month, I could play the most intensive games, temps are not a problem and nothing would happen. However, a month passed and then one day it turned off and turned itself on again. I am stumped.

My educated guess would be that it's the PSU acting up but I am not sure why I fixed it for a month. I have noticed that every time I open up the computer and fiddle inside, I seem to hold off the shutdowns for a week or a few days.

I have run memtest for about 2 passes with no errors, and I have not yet seen it shutdown when not in windows. It hasn't shut down in safe mode or in the bios (however I havent tested it for very long)

My motherboard was already replaced before the build as it was DOA, and I have run stress tests on the GPU and CPU. (nothing happened)

Any help is greatly appreciated, my main question is why was I able to stop the shutdowns for a month, and why is it that every time I fiddle about inside I can stop it for a bit longer.

What I have done so far : Ran Memtest for 1 pass, updated bios, stress tested CPU, stress tested GPU, turned it off and on again.

Specs

GTX 770
I5 4670k @3.4ghz
8gb ram @1600mhz
XFX 650W bronze edition semi-modular PSU
Coolermaster hyper 212 EVO

Edit - Just checked Speccy and my total physical ram is 8GB, but my available physical ram is 5.6GB? Could this be a RAM problem? I'm going to run Memtest for a few more passes tonight. - NVM it goes up to 6 when I am not on google chrome and I'm guessing 1GB is being given to other things.

Hi,

Based on your information, you may have an issue with your reset button. As you built the PC, you're aware of where that is connected to your motherboard. Please disconnect it completely and see if that makes a difference.

I'm not sure by your description if when you "shut down" the PC yourself, if the PC stays off. Could you verify that. I'm guessing that what you're describing is the PC is not shutting off, but rather doing a restart or reset.

You haven't indicated if the Windows is giving you any BSOD or other message, or if it just goes black, and restarts. Please provide that as well.

Let me know,

Kurt

Hmm I never thought of that. However, the computer shuts off. All LEDs and everything goes off and then they all turn on again after 2-3 seconds. I believe with the reset button they would all stay on and the computer would just reboot.

I just removed the RESET SW wire and turned it on, it turned off before even booting :P, then it automatically restarted itself and I'm in windows now. I don't think it's fixed but I'm going to test for a bit.

EDIT - I also realised the USB 3.0 cable wasn't plugged in. I don't know if that is relevant but I have now plugged it in.

Hi Thornbird,

The LEDs may shut off in a restart, depending on your hardware. Did you try the shut down from Windows to see if it stays shut down?

Hi Thornbird,

The LEDs may shut off in a restart, depending on your hardware. Did you try the shut down from Windows to see if it stays shut down?

Kurt

When I press the reset button, the LED's stay on but the computer reboots. However, ever since I've taken it out I haven't had a reboot except for the one that happened the second I started it.

However, it's not a very long timespan to check as these reboots are random. Sometimes I can go a few days without one and then have one. One thing I've noticed is once I have one, it will keep happening if I try to play an intensive game like RIFT or titanfall.

Well, bleep. Just had another random reboot. :/

We can confirm its hardware because after I had my first reboot I had 2 more within 5 minutes, one of them before I even loaded windows.

I tried to switch the reset sw wire with the power button wire but it didn't work :/

I really really dont want it to be the motherboard because with our old motherboard Ebuyer just claimed that it was damaged on delivery and so we had to buy a new one and I don't think I can disassemble everything again. That's pretty much my last resort.

Any suggestions?

Hi Thornbird,

There's a number of things that are showing up in your log from MiniToolbox, but as to which one is, or could be causing your problem doesn't jump out at me at first glance. If you haven't done so, please start the PC in safe mode to test the stability. If you've done this already, please let me know if you experienced the same issues. Troubleshooting can be frustrating, especially if takes multiple days.

Let me know,

Kurt

Hi again,

After looking at the logs a bit more, There's certainly some evidence of a problem with Kaspersky, and some other indications of problems. It might be a good idea to test the integrity of your hard drive to rule that out. One way to verify this would be to download the hard drive utility from the manufacturer of your hard drive to test it. Prior to doing that though, as a precaution, I would insure that you have your data backed up somewhere other than this drive.

Take care,

Kurt

Go to Kaspersky's website and download their uninstall tool.

Go to 1. How to use this utility and download the appropriate version.

Going by the S.M.A.R.T. attributes in the Speccy snapshot there is no indication of a problem with the hdd.  There are no indication in the MiniToolBox either.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

It says that it cannot detect any kapersky on my system, I deleted a few things anyway using the manual delete. Can corrupt files in windows affect my computer even before it has booted? Because sometimes these reboots happen before I have even entered windows. I also noticed that once one reboot happens, quite a few happen after that if I continue to play intensive games. If I just browse, it's normally fine.

Let's see if there is a problem with your RAM.

1) Please download the Memtest86 Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO file.

2) Unzip the downloaded memtest86 file.  You will need a program like 7-Zip to unzip this file.

3) Inside, you will find the memtest86 file.

4) Please download and install ImageBurn.

5) Insert blank CD into your CD drive.

6) Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc.

7) Click on the Browse for a file... icon:

8) Locate the memtest86 file, and click on the Open button.

9) Click on the blue arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD.

10) Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

Please note:  It may be neccessary to change the boot order in the BIOS so the CD/DVD-ROM is the first device in the boot order and the hdd second.

Each pass consists of 8 tests, it is suggested that you run at least 7 passes, this will take several hours, you may find it simpler to let it run overnight.  The longer you run the passes the more comprehensive the results will be.

If you are running multiple modules and have a failure, remove all but one module and test it separately, continue this with each module till you find the one that failed.

When you discern that a module is good, use it to test each slot to be sure there isn't a problem with one of them.

When the test is complete a display similar to the one below will appear.  Note the locations of the Pass and Errors, any Error is indicative of a failed module.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

I have already run Memtest overnight for 4 passes and the computer did not shut off the whole night, neither was there any problem with RAM.
