Laptop won't shut down/log off

My company sent an update through and my computer started to run slowly but still ran so I ignored it.  I came home to log in through our VPN network and my computer was running pathetically slowly so i closed everything and tried to shut down which was 25-30 minutes ago. It is still showing a blue screen showing it's working on logging me off.  Any Advice?

 

Should I hold the power button to force it to shut off?  Should i leave it plugged in until I can get it back to my work network?
