Hello! I only just joined this site, and I feel like I should preface this post by saying that I don't 100% understand the workings of this forum and I'm not very experienced with computers. I apologize in advance if I'm unhelpful in any way.

So, one night recently, I noticed that my computer suddenly became incredibly sluggish. I restarted it, but it wasn't but minutes later before it slowed down again. I checked the Task Manager, and found at least a dozen copies of the process "dllhost.exe" running at the same time and bringing my CPU up to nearly 100%. The processes are described as COM Surrogate and their full file name is C:\Windows\SysWOW64\dllhost.exe. Manually terminating them all temporarily fixed things, but it took barely any time at all before they automatically came back.

More problems have arisen since then. For one thing, sometimes one of one of my internet tabs will randomly open up some sort of advertisement website, which leads me to believe that this problem is likely caused by some sort of virus or malware. I've run multiple scans on Malwarebites and SUPERAntiSpyware both in and out of Safe Mode, but the former finds no problems with my computer, and while the latter has found and removed several files over the course of its scans, the problem remains.

In my research online, I saw something stating that the program dllhost.exe is a virus if it's not located in the folder C:\Windows\System32 and that I can stop the problem simply by deleting it. I did a quick search on my computer's files for dllhost.exe, and I do have three instances of it in other folders, but I don't want to be too quick to trust just anything I read online. Here are all the locations of dllhost.exe on my computer:

C:\Windows\System32

C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-com-surrogate_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_a018e05d0d33081d

C:\Windows\SysWOW64 (this is the one the processes are coming from)

C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-com-surrogate_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_43fa44d954d596e7

Are any of the three other places normal for dllhost.exe? My computer is a 64-bit Dell Windows 7 PC, if that makes any difference. Assuming the solution isn't so simple as deleting the virus manually, what steps should I take to fix my computer?

Just finished the Malwarebytes scan, but nothing was detected, so there was no prompt to restart after the scan. I hope it's alright if I just skip to the step "After the restart once you are back at your desktop, open MBAM once more." and continue from there. Here's the scan log...

Rkill never instructed me to reboot. Its log opened up automatically after it finished, so I guess I'll just post it now...

Clean so far...

p22002970.gif Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Alternate download: http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

p22002970.gif Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan button.
  • When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

p22002970.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

p22002970.gif Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner.

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Internet Explorer users - Click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on ESET Smart Installer to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check "Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications".
  • Click Advanced settings and make sure all 4 boxes are checkmarked (two of them are already checkmarked by default).
Do NOT checkmark "Use custom proxy settings"
  • Click the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

(Sorry for being late to reply again. When I made my original message here, I didn't think I'd have so few opportunities to use the computer in the following weeks, ha ha...)

Okay, I just finished with TFC and AdwCleaner. TFC did not ask me to restart after it was finished, if that matters at all.

Anyways, here's AdwCleaner's log file:

How is computer doing?

p22002970.gif Update Firefox to the current 32.0.3 version.

p22002970.gif Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions (if present).
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

p22002970.gif Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Alternate download: http://www.filehippo.com/search?q=java

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: If you're running 64-bit system make sure you install BOTH, 32-bit and 64-bit Java.

Note 3: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

Well... everything seems to be normal again, as far as I can tell! I guess the infection's gone now. Thank you so, so much for your help! Seriously, I don't know what I would've done without this website. Well, without this website, I'd use another, I suppose, but that's beside the point. :P

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Launch a quick scan now" link)

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly ((you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix))

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

Okay, um... I have bad news. The virus... seems to be back. I restarted my computer today for the first time since after getting rid of the virus, and when it came back on, all the immediately obvious symptoms of the virus were back in full force. Countless copies of Dllhost.exe were open, my browsing history was set to not record anything past 1 day ago, my security settings are set to prevent me from downloading anything... it's all back.

I'm really sorry to have to ask for more help when the virus should've been eradicated by now, but I don't feel comfortable just re-doing all the previous advice, since I'm not sure what went wrong in the first place. So... what should I do?

Edit:

Actually, wait, I think I have an idea about how the virus could've come back. When I got to the step, "If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!", I thought I had no important accounts or passwords anywhere, so I didn't change anything. I'm mainly just signed up to a few forums and unimportant websites and nothing more. No bank accounts, nothing with personal information... But after thinking about it, could my e-mail provider count as a "secured web site"? I barely ever use my e-mail address in the first place, so I tend to not think about it too often, but upon consideration, it's the only thing I have a password for that could be considered important or secured. If it is, then that might be the reason the virus came back! And if that's the case and it is the reason, well... it'd be totally my fault for making an assumption it wasn't secured and not researching whether or not it was... I'm really sorry for being lazy like that!
