Hello.

It was requested by OH My!, Malware Response Instructor, to post to this forum. Oh My! has been working throughout the malware forum to assist me with this computer issue, however we were unable to come to a complete fix.

The computer is a Windows XP. At first there was an issue with possible malware and a malware and ad-ware identifying program highlighted this. At the time the malwarebytes was not able to update either and has not been able to since. We have not yet completed that step.

At the same time the video driver, NVidia GeForce FX 5200 was having a problem and somehow disabled itself and reverted back to the generic Windows XP video driver. I should also mention that there has been a screen flicker as well. This has also caused the 'stand by' setting under computer shut down to be disabled.

We tried a few times to re-enable and update the video driver, however the flicker was worse with the enabled driver. Then we disabled the driver again and uninstalled the driver and downloaded a newer version. This at least re-enabled the stand-by mode, but was still flickering.

In the same session, after testing and putting the system in stand-by mode. The keyboard was not working when bringing the computer out of stand-by. On the back of the computer there are 4 lights - 3 were green (A-B-C) and the 4th (D) was yellow. All four should have been green. After a hard shut down and restart it took a few tries to get the computer to start with keyboard functionality.

Soon after, a few logs were requested including a System Summary. Oh My! mentioned to post the link to the System Summary here, which is below (Posting #113) because at first the summary looked to be in good shape, but he sees some entries in the Conflicts/Sharing portion that do not look correct. This is where he seeks your assistance.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/533892/registry-problem-can-not-download-and-mbr-possible-error/page-8#entry3477521

Presently, the updated NVidia GeForce FX 5200 is enabled with sporadic flickering. The keyboard issue is not something that happens all the time.

Thank you for your help.

hello hamluis. thank you for your help. here is the requested information. Note that we use firefox portable on the computer, not IE. It looks to be the default though. We also do not use the Msft Office, instead LibreOffice. thank you.

If I disregard all errors associated with Internet connectivity...there aren't a lot remaining.

Try running the MS Fixit at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259 .

I see no evidence of a problem with video or keyboard, so let's not focus on such at this time.

You don't report any connectivity problems...but you have a number of errors related to such.

It appears that you have AOL dialup software installed...I suggest uninstalling it and then reinstalling it, since it may be responsible for any connectivity problems.

After doing that, tell us if you have the XP Revoery Console installed...I believe this Dell system should have that as a boot option.

hello. hamluis. I ran the MS Fix. I am pretty sure the XP Recovery Console is insalled, but how would I double check. I am not sure it was a manufacturer install, maybe something we had installed thereafter. thank you.

Yes,...can you uninstall it and then reinstall it?  It's possible that corrupted software is creating some of your connectivity issues, IMO.

hello hamluis.

Sorry for the delay. I had placed the computer in 'hibernate' mode and the same issue arose with the keyboard not working when bringing the computer back from hibernation. I noticed that the 4 letters on the back of the tower were lit in different colors. A-B-C were green and D was yellow. They should all be green. It took me a while to get the system back running with the keyboard after switching the connection and keyboard a few times.

Here is the log after the aol uninstall/reinstall.

thank you.

Not sure why you posted here in middle of your malware topic...but the above seems to be a continuation of the errors previously displayed in your MRL topic.

Please...finish that before posting any possible issues that are not possibly related to malware.

Thanks :).

hello hamluis.

Thank you for your assistance. The Malware Response Instructor, member name "Oh My!" recommended that I post to this forum referring to the video driver and keyboard issue. He worked diligently and did not find any malware. Where should I continue?

Thank you.

Well...I don't see any evidence of a mouse/keyboard problem...what makes you think that there is one?

When the average person thinks that there is a problem with a keyboard or mouse...he/she will normally try a different one, since all hardware fails at some point.  Have you tried a different keyboard...a different mouse?  Have you tried your keyboard/mouse combo on another system?

hello hamluis,

Thank you for your help Please let me provide you an overview leading up to this point, which has all been under forum member troubleshooting.

- 3rd party program points to possible malware issue and malwarebytes not working properly. post to forum for resolution.
- at same time computer screen flickering non-stop and I noticed that my video driver was disabled after I restarted computer. XP reverts to a generic XP video driver. I also saw that my 'stand-by' and hibernation' mode was disabled as well. Working through forum postings and directions. I am instructed to try to re-enable driver and restart computer. same results. Changed system configuration utility boot.ini options. Thereafter instructed to uninstall current driver and download and install updated driver. Created system restore point. Screen flickering happens sporadic, not continuous. 'stand-by' and hibernation' enabled. Good sign. Changed back system configuration utility boot.ini options. During testing phase I placed the computer in 'hibernation mode' and when I restarted the computer, keyboard does not function and I proceed to check the back of the computer for connections. I notice the 4 letters - A-B-C-D - they should all be lit green. The D is lit yellow. Unplugged keyboard and connected directly into keyboard port instead of USB. Same results. Switch out keyboard and re-start. Same results. After 4th/5th try, plugged original keyboard in USB port again and thankfully works. Restarted and tried again without putting in hibernation and computer starts with no issue except for the sporadic screen flicker. Tried one last time with hibernation and back to square one with keyboard not being recognized when computer restarts. Currently, computer is running and have not put computer in stand-by or hibernation since.

Should you have any detailed questions, I will do my best to answer them. Thank you for your help.
