I have a Windows 8.1 OS and for some odd reason my Google Chrome browser keeps opening windows and tabs by itself whether I have the browser open or not. Also when I click on a link or an email a new Google Chrome tab or window will open. I ran spybot, malwarebytes, and McAfee virus scan and they did not solve the issue. I even tried closing the program in task manager and deleting Google Chrome and re-downloading it and that didn't help. Would you happen to know what the issue may be and help me out?

Thank you

Hi Tracy, it may still be malware.

  • Reset FF Proxy Settings

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract (unzip) its contents to your desktop.
  • Open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • .
    .
    .

  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
  • After reviewing the log, click on the Clean button.
  • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S0].txt) will open automatically.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.
  • -- Note: The contents of the AdwCleaner log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you recognize and know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, return to AdwCleaner before cleaning...all detected items will be listed (and checked) in each tab. Click on each one and uncheck any items you want to keep (except you cannot uncheck Chrome and Firefox preferences lines).

    .

thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.

  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
  • Scan potentially unwanted applications
  • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
  • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.

I am having the same problem. You are the third person that I have found that is having issues with the windows opening up every 10 mins. It is either some malware connected to chrome, or it is a browser issue.. I hope they fix it soon, or I will have to uninstall chrome until they do

To all that are having problems with the chrome window popping up every 10 minutes. If you have survey savvy's savvyconnect extension on your chrome browser, that is what is causing it. You have to unistall savvyconnect. If you just delete it out of chrome, the sneaky little bugger, reinstalls itself in the browser, and keeps replicating windows every 10 minutes. I emailed surveysavvy to let them know. I uninstalled the whole program, and the windows stopped popping up. I hope this helps everyone. :)

Thank you so much Mistysunrise! As a matter of fact I do have the savvy's savvyconnect extension in my google chrome browser and for some odd reason when my browser opens by itself the savvyconnect extension keeps popping up for me to add it again. I will try deleting it like you said and see if the fixes the problem. Thanks again!

You are very welcome. I would suggest going to survey savvy and emailing them about it.

To Insanity and Beyond,

Thank you for your post to help me with my issue.  When Mistysunrise said something about this company called Survey Savvy and their software called Savvy Connect I realized that may be what's wrong with my pc and since I deleted that software off my pc completely it seems like my issue has been resolved. My Google Chrome browser has not opened by itself at all since. What did you mean by see post 4 if you don't know how to do it?

Thanks again Mistysunrise.

You are very welcome. :) I am glad it is fixed for you.  I think he was saying look at post #4 if you dont know how to take extensions off of Chrome. Just taking the extension off didnt help though. The little bugger, reinstalled itself as an extension. I had to delete the whole savvyconnect app from surveysavvy for it to stop.

Glad to hear it is worked out.. Yes always look in Program t Uninstall related apps...

Lastly ... Empty your temp folders using TFC (Temporary File Cleaner)
  • Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
    alternate download link
  • Save any unsaved work. (TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!)
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. (If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose "Run As Administrator".)
  • Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway allowing Windows to load normally (not into Safe Mode) to ensure a complete clean.

I've tried everything in this post plus Malwarebytes, Spybot, Adaware and I am still getting popups that are outgoing & being blocked by Malwarebytes. Everything comes back clean from Adwcleaner and Malwarebytes... I'm at a loss.....
