Hello.

I am posting a Hijackthis Log. I truly appreciate your analysis.

I know that I have a Virtumonde infection. I have looked at posts on how to get rid of this. Adaware consistently finds it but is unable to kill it. Also, there is a Hitbox thing that Spybot consistently finds but cannot clean.

Also, whenever I shut down I get a blue screen telling me that windows had a problem with a file called WTLX.sys. Is this a file that rings a bell as malware?

Here is the log. Thanks.

Hi Fish Head,

You forgot to post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt

*******************

Do you see anything that would cause the computer to crash on shut down?

Have you had an computer crashes since we remove the vundo malware?

*******************

You have a suspicious file we need to check.

You will need to configure Windows to show Hidden files.

Go to Jotti Online File Scanner copy and paste C:\WINDOWS\System32\WTLXPan.Exe to the upload and scan it.

Let me know the results.
Copy and paste the output to this thread

It should look something like this sample:

File: GoogleToolbarInstaller.exe
Status: MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless. Caution is advised, however.)
Packers detected: CEXE

AntiVir No viruses found (0.15 seconds taken)
Avast No viruses found (1.51 seconds taken)
BitDefender No viruses found (0.97 seconds taken)
ClamAV No viruses found (0.39 seconds taken)
Dr.Web No viruses found (0.52 seconds taken)
F-Prot Antivirus No viruses found (0.06 seconds taken)
Kaspersky Anti-Virus No viruses found (0.74 seconds taken)
mks_vir No viruses found (0.21 seconds taken)
NOD32 No viruses found (0.42 seconds taken)
Norman Virus Control No viruses found (0.40 seconds taken

SifuMike,

Since I removed the malware, the scan is clean. I do not get any Vundofix text. Is there something else I should be doing?

Are keyloggers malware of the sort that can be detected by any of these tools? Is it possible to detect a keylogger?

Thanks.

Yes, you need to post the Jotti scan I asked you to do.

Did you used to have Panda antiviurs on this computer?

After I see the Jotti scan, we will fix some items on your Hijackthis log.

Are keyloggers malware of the sort that can be detected by any of these tools? Is it possible to detect a keylogger?

Yes, both Spybot 1.4 and Adaware SE will find many (but not all) keyloggers.
Keyloggers will be detected in your Hijackthis log, and I see none.

Why do you think there is a keylogger on this computer?
Who uses this computer? What members of your family uses it?

The Internet Explorer version (6.00.2800.1106) is out of date. You can get reinfected in minutes with an old version of Internet Explorer.
Go to Microsoft's windows update site
and do all Critical Updates.

Thanks. The scan looks clear. Here are the results.

I have no reason to believe there is a keylogger on this machine. The idea of keyloggers is offensive and I wondered whether they elude Adaware and/or Spybot scans.

My version of Windows apparentlycannot be updated because they guy that built my machine did not buy a separate license for my operating system. I used the computer for years before discovering this. My concern is that reinstalling the operating system will force me to reinstall everything on the machine. Sooner or later I will wind up doing that. For now, I back things up on a seperate hard drive.

Hardware keyloggers Hijackthis (or any of the antispyware software) will not find. But software keyloggers will show up in Hijackthis, Adaware SE and Spybot 1.4.

You mean you have a illegal, cracked or pirated copy of Windows on this computer?

SifuMike,

I used to use Panda. I uninstalled it a while ago.

My guess is that the operating system is "cracked" if that means that it was altered somehow. I did not get a disc with the computer and the guy sort of admited it when I called and asked about it.

That not good!
Since you bought the computer this way and paid for Windows to be installed, I would go back to the person you bought it from and tell them to provide you with a legit version of Windows, or you will notify MS he is selling illegal, cracked or pirated versions.
MS will take immediate and swift action against him if he does not comply.

Not only do you have a big problem with MS for using an illegal, priated or cracked version of Windows, but you will be constantly be attacked with malware since you cannot update Windows and get the critical fixes.

You just have some minor cleanup to do in your log.

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

In Normal Mode, select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: PAVWAIT.DLL

*******************************************

Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Don't use the windows start\search feature
Using Windows Explorer, find and delete each of the following. If you can't delete an item, right-click it and click properties. Make sure 'read-only' is unchecked.
If you still can't delete something, right-click it and rename it to a random word. Then drag the item to a different location. Try deleting it now. If you still can't, be sure to let me know.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following files/folders in bold (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\PAVWAIT.DLL <==file

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Finally, reboot to the Normal Mode and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

Thank you. I will do this.

The guy that built my machine now has a host of legal problems. Its really unfortunate. From a hardware point of view, he builds a great machine. At some point I will bite the bullet and re-install everything. In the mean time, I am working hard to keep this thing running for as long as I can.
