Infected With Viruses (i Think): Nstask32.exe, System32.exe, Svchost.exe

Hello,

My computer is really slow right now, and I think I found some viruses using SpyBot and the Task Manager. I found nstask32.exe and system32.exe using the Spybot startup function, and I found the SVCHOST.EXE with the task manager and the task list at answerthatwork.com. I emptied all the temporary folders and deleted cookies and ran spybot, ewido, norton, mcafee stinger, and adaware, but I still don't know how to get rid of the problem. I actually disabled the two viruses I found in the startup spybot function, but didn't delete them there because I wasn't sure that would fully fix the problem.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hello JoeyT07,

Let's make sure all the viruses are gone.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK

Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Then post the results from the Kapersky scan.

Thanks for getting back to me!

Sorry to get back to you so late, but it took me three tries to get through the scan because I kept getting a hard disck error. I don't know what that means, but I had done a check disk fix recently for the same problem, and I was directed to the same Microsoft link.

In the end, the Kaspersky scan came up empty. I didn't see any place to save a report, all it said was "No malware has been detected. The sections that have been scanned are CLEAN."

Hello JoeyT07,

If Kaspersky found no viruses, then you are clean.

I see some items in your log to fix.

First, uninstall "Kontiki" in add/remove programs if present.

Click on start, then control panel, and then double-click on add/remove programs. From within add/remove program uninstall the following if they exist by double-clicking on the following entries:
Kontiki

Reboot.

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.


2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

Finally, reboot to the Normal Mode and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

Thanks! I made the changes in Hijack this (my new log is below). I also ran the Ccleaner in the only user account I have, but I didn't run it as the administrator (I wasn't sure if I should). My computer started up pretty well (I think quicker than usual), but I haven't had a chance to see how it is running. I can get back to you about that in a couple of days if you'd like.

Thanks! There's a definite improvement. What should I do with those files I turned off with Spybot (nstask32.exe and system32.exe)? It recognized both of them as worms. Should I just delete them?

Yes, you can delete them. :thumbsup:


Lets clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.
