Hi,

My computer (running windows 8 and Norton 360) has been infected with something as everytime I click on a link (and sometimes when I do nothing at all), another tab opens up in whatever browser I'm using and tries to take me to what I believe is a malicious website.  The website that opens can be one of a number, and sometime Norton recognises them as being suspicious and blocks them.

I first noticed the virus when I was installing updates from Filehippo (is this an unsafe website?) and I was just about to install an update to Adobe Flash Player, where I was sent to the Adobe website to install by File Hippo.  This is not unusual as I don't believe that FileHippo stores the Adobe update files on their servers anymore.  I had just clicked the link to select my version of Flash Player to install, and I got my first redirect which was blocked by Norton.  Is the Adobe website infected, or is it a coincidence?

I am currently running a Norton 360 full scan, Malwarebytes free edition full scan and SuperAntispyware free edition full scan.  Malwarebytes (so far) is the only program to have found anything:

PUP.Optional.TermTutor.A

PUP.Optional.Superfish.A

PUP.Optional.Installcore.A

I am worried though that there are other things lurking on my computer which have not been found.  Is there anything else I should be doing to make sure I'm clean?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.

  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.

Hello,

I first noticed the virus [...]

What you are experiencing is not the result of a virus.
Browser redirects are usually caused by adware or browser hijackers. Redirects can also be symptoms of more sophisticated types of malware. For example, the TDSS rootkit is well known to redirect search results. What you are experiencing is most likely caused by adware/browser hijacker.

[...] when I was installing updates from Filehippo (is this an unsafe website?) and I was just about to install an update to Adobe Flash Player

When it comes to installing updates, the safest practice is downloading directly from the vendor's site.
Alternatively, you can use a software monitoring tool like Secunia.

Is the Adobe website infected, or is it a coincidence?

No, the Adobe website is not infected.

Malwarebytes (so far) is the only program to have found anything:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has detected software considered to be a Potentially Unwanted Programme (PUP). This type of software, whilst not inherently malicious, is known to be bundled of foisted with other software, and will often add extensions, Browser Helper Objects (BHOs), plugins, etc to your browser.

Thanks for this, do you reckon I should change all my passwords, or was this just an annoyance (i.e. trying to get me to buy fake software etc, rather than skimming details off my computer), rather than an actual threat?

Hello,

It wouldn't hurt to change your passwords. Best practice is to do so every 3-6 months in any case.

From your logs, nothing identified would appear capable of logging key strokes, so I wouldn't worry.

Stick with Broni for follow up scans.

Thanks, I think they're definitely due a change as I haven't done so in some time, so will start working my way through these as soon as I get the all clear from Broni.

Many thanks for your help, very much appreciated.

Thanks, computer seems to be operating fine at present.

I think Flash has been bundled into IE and Chrome and both the latest windows and Chrome updates have now been installed.

The Java website also reports that I already have the latest version of Java (Version 8 Update 20)

Is there anything else I need to do, or is that everything clean?

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Launch a quick scan now" link)

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly ((you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix))

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

11. Read:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/keep-your-computer-safe-online/
