Hello.

I have recently sent my laptop (a Dell Inspiron N5110) for formatting and changed its Windows 7 Home Basic to Windows 7 Ultimate version.

I thought that probably there were virus or malaware issues and if it got formatted, it would be as good as new.  The laptop was facing issues like:

-all its restore points were deleted

-starting up and shutting down on its own several times

-it would not connect to the internet

-parser error windows

- IAStorIcon stopped working

-freezing in the middle of just anything

BUT now, it is still sluggish.  I might be going on the Internet, checking my mail or typing a microsoft office document or opening a media file, and it just stops responding in the middle of anything. It just says whatever application has stopped responding.  For the browser, it will just say browser has stopped responding, wait or kill page.

Sometimes I refresh and have to wait for some full minutes to get the laptop operating again.

It is very annoying and I am at a loss.  What should I be doing now?

Well...outside the fact that your partitions appear to be setup strangely...I don't see any obvious clues to what the problem might be.

Do you have a valid license to use Win 7 Ultimate?  For a new install, you seem to have a lot key services/components not working properly...this can be an indication of malware, IMO.

SR, your AV defenses, and connection issues...IMO, those are indicative of a system in trouble.

Moving topic to Am I Infected forum for a look by the more knowledgeable.  If you still have issues after their look, please just initiate a new topic here in the Win 7 forum.

The Speccy shows that you reinstalled Windows 7 on 9/6/2014, so this is a fresh installation.  Did you install the drivers after the installation?

I also see that you do not have Service Pack 1 installed, you need to do this now.

Yes, I sent it to be formatted at a friend's place on that day.  And he installed the drivers after installation.

I am installing the Service Pack now. Will let you know how it's progressing.

Thanks for the help.

Did you friend use your computer to format and install the operating system?

You have another problem.  Since you installed a different version of Windows 7 you will not be able to use the product key to activate the system.

Well, I am clearly at a loss. I don't really know what he did, except that he volunteered to repair my laptop and it was functioning again the next day, without me having to take it to some professional.

But now I wonder if I did not aggravate the issues.

What would you advise me to do now?

What I'm trying to find out is if he removed your hard disk drive (hdd) and installed in in their computer to reinstall the operating system, and then installed it back in your computer.  If they did this and didn't use the sysprep command to remove the identifiers the operating system may have some problems resulting from this.  If they used your computer to make the installation the problems you are experiencing would not be related to the installation of the operating system.

But as I posted previously, this may be a moot point because you will not be able to get this version of Windows 7 activated with the product key which came with your laptop.

What is the make and Model of this laptop?

I should add that most all OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) come with a System Recovery Partition which can be used to restore the operating system to the state it came from the factory.  If you laptop has this, and your friend didn't damage or remove it you should be able to restore the original Windows Home Premium, and SP1 if it was installed at that time.

This is why I need the make and model of this laptop.

Hello.

I did as you said, but the Drive Status says short DST FAIL and I can't get the final Test Status.

Should I go for another test?

Thx

That means that the drive has failed or is in the process of failing.

I would backup all of your important data to removable media, like an external hdd, flash drive, DVDs or CDs, etc.

You will need to purchase a new hdd and install Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

When you are ready I will provide you with a link to download the ISO image which you will need to burn to a disc to create a bootable installation disc, and instructions for creating the disc.
