I have an Asus VX238H-W(white) monitor with built in speakers. It is plugged into my computer via HDMI>DVI cable (monitor doesn't have a DVI port and computer doesn't have an HDMI port) and an audio cable to the audio out port on the motherboard. The computer recognizes the speakers as a device and when I play sound the volume meter shows that it is playing, but I never get sound. Both the volume on the computer and the monitor is turned up. I have made sure the audio driver for my motherboard (Asus P8Z77) is updated.

Here are all of my specs as well: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/jlwzmcqtKQsvX16LwiXFKFu

I wonder if it's because the monitor is expecting audio to be received through the HDMI cable rather than the audio mini jack when using an HDMI connection?  I guess you could try it using the VGA monitor input instead of HDMI to confirm or rule out this.

That was what I was thinking too, now to just get my hands on a VGA>DVI converter since my PC doesn't have VGA either...

Edit: knew I had one around here, that is exactly what was happening. That sucks I can't use HDMI and the audio cable at once.

It is a shame they didn't think of people using DVI/HDMI adapters.  I don't suppose there is a setting buried in the menu to change the sound input on HDMI is there?  If not, a cheap set of powered speakers will do the job.

I've been all through the settings and there is nothing, and a live chat with Asus confirmed their terrible product.
