Hi there!
I have a PC running Windows 7 Home Premium. Recently its been acting really oddly. I know there are viruses on it. AVG finds some, I delete them but there is no real improvement. Some of the symptoms:
the PC is very slow and always seems to be working (regardless of whether or not I can see it doing anything). I am constantly getting small alerts telling me that Internet Explorer can't open a page, even when I'm not actively searching the web or even working at all on the machine. If I start Task Manager I see files like avgui.eve *32, ctfmon.exe *32, multiple copies of dllhost.exe *32 using tons of resources. I can close some of them, but they just reappear. If I open the user/appdata/temp folder it finds thousands of folders - I can delete some of them but they just return.
Can you help figure out what is wrong here and get it working properly again please?

Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum.~ Animal

  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

Started running scans. So far the servicecheck scan will not complete - it hangs up at the 'performing system health check' step. Still trying.. Here is the FSS result:

Here is the second scan. It came back and told me no infections. What concerns me is that while it was scanning, and then again while it was created the log txt file, I got these weird windows opening telling me that Internet Explorer has stopped working... even though I wasn't even using Internet Explorer. I could post a couple pictures of these dumb windows, but I don't want to violate any posting guidelines. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. No idea what is causing those :(

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.

  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

I ran that scan as requested and it came back with no infected files. Oddly enough, while the scan was running AVG found two infected files and supposedly handled them, and when that scan was finished and showed it's result with no infected files, AVG found another problem. Frustrating to no end!!! I feel like I am beating my head against a wall. I do appreciate your help, but I just don't think that route is going to work. Something is stopping these things from doing what they're supposed to do and seeing what they're supposed to see.

I think I am going to try and work around this. I went into safe mode and was able to create a new user account with administrative access. I logged off the problem account and logged into the new account then shutdown the computer. When I restarted it, I logged into the new account. I am going to download what files I can from the old account, scan them on another machine and move them to the new account. If the new account remains stable for a few days, I have a new question. Is there any easy way to completely remove all settings and files associated with that old account?
