As I tried to download combofix, II got the progress bar then a message "You can't rename Combofix to Combofix(1)". After that I got nothing, so I tried it again and got the same message.  How do I get the download that just has Combofix.exe?

thanks

Where did you download ComboFix? The official site for downloading ComboFix is provided in the authorized Guide and tutorial on using ComboFix which redirects here.

If not, be aware there are a number of unauthorized sites which hosts older versions. ComboFix.org and ComboFixdownload.com offer unauthorized versions of Combofix and the download links are seldom current. Neither of these sites are affiliated with ComboFix by sUBs.

I downloaded from   BleepingComputer.com   as told to me by our computer experts  MePush.  The cited the same reasons as you for not downloading from just anywhere.  I have used this site and combofix before with no trouble.  The download goes fine until it gives the warning to turn off  Microsoft Essentials before using combofix.  Then I get an error box that says-----

You cannot rename ComboFix as ComboFix(4)

Please use another name, preferably made up of alphanumeric characters

After I say OK, it kicks me out of the download.  What am I doing wrong to keep getting this error.  With each try to download, the number goes up i.e.   ComboFix(5), CF6, CF7, etc.

Thanks for responding to my problem.

Can you go to the directory where you're downloading Combofix to, and just run Combofix.exe?

Have you downloaded ComboFix successful previously and if so, where did you save it?

Combofix(1), Combofix(2), etc indicates the file may have already been downloaded and if so, it should be removed before using again. If that is the case see How to uninstall ComboFix.

If not, try downloading and saving it to another location, another computer or a usb drive...then move it to the Desktop of the infected computer. It needs to be run from the Desktop.

AngryHan, I am not sure where the directory is.  I just go to my download file to try to combofix there.  Could you please tell me where to look?

Thank you for the reply

quietman7, I have been successful before and when I start the download, a message box come up with some info and at the bottom of the box, it gives me    a save file option, but no choice as to where to should go.  It does always go to my download folder on my computer.  How can and where should I choose to download it.

Thank you for the reply, Oldjim

ComboFix should be saved directly to the Desktop.

Where are downloaded files saved?

When you download files, Windows usually saves them in the Downloads folder, which is located under your user name in the Users folder on the drive where Windows is installed (for example C:\users\your name\downloads). When you are saving the file, you can choose to save it to a different folder. Some different types of files are saved to different folders by default. For example, if you right-click a picture on a webpage and then choose Save Picture As from the menu, the picture will be saved to the Pictures folder by default. If you're not sure where the file was saved, you can search for it from the Start menu.

You're welcome and good luck.

BTW, if you have not already done so, please read ComboFix usage, Questions, Help? - Look here before using the tool.
